This morning I accidentally left doser on soda ash liquid solution. 97 ml in total 100 gal volume tank. Alk raised from 8.9 to 10.3dkh. Turned all dozers off and now and now at 9.8. Should I worry or just let it settle back down to 8.9dkh over next days? Or really need to do something else? Tank and corals look same for now. Thanks

Opinions vary
whats in the tank?
You could add some RODI and get some dilution effect.

Already 0.9 from baseline, I'd probably just let it drop it its going that quick for you.
That’s what I would likely do, unless there’s a lot fo sps that are used to a tight range.

mostly monti’s, green slimers, several acro frag’s, acan. Fish and shrimp, snails hermits. At this point calculating it will be down to 9.2dkh by tomorrow so thinking just sticking with letting it deplete on its own. I did do 5 gal water change since that is all I had and dkh didn’t move lol

If your salt mixes up to around your target of 8.9, just as an example, you'd need a significant water change to make a dent to that number on your 100 gallon volume tank. Changing out 50 gallons with 8.9 Kh water still just brings you to 9.35 from 9.8. Not a crazy number for the amount of work you'd put in for that.

That’s why adding some RODI would have more bang with minimal impact on salinity

Several threads of people overdosing now. What doser and how did it happen? Dosing thru apex?
It was my mistake I went to change timer on doser setup and didn’t realize I didn’t change the “hour” time and was going to dose something like 20 hours. Lol. Thank goodness I seen my ph spike up and stopped at around 90 minutes on a 1.1 ml per minute doser

It wouldn’t that dilute my salinity which I don’t want to do!

All depends on how high the salinity is and how much you add..
Seems like you should just let it sit. Depending on your demand it likely will drop in a day or two.

IMHO, since alk swings - in either direction - can be damaging, and since yours is already falling, I would let it stabilize by itself. If anything was affected by the spike, you don't want to make it worse by lowering it too quickly

How much of a swing do you see that can be an issue?
I would also think if it was on either end of the acceptable range it could have a bigger impact

If you're directing that to me, I don't understand your question. The OP had a quick rise from 8.9 to 10.3.
It was a general question. In your op, what kind of swing (1.0, 1.5) in DkH is most likely to be problematic?

Do you think a swing from the ends of the “accepted range” is likely to be more problematic?

Ex if it’s at 9.0 and jumps to 10.5 is that more likely to be and issue than say going from 8.0 to 9.5?

No informed idea. I would imagine that a 1.5 swing is the same level of "bad" regardless of the starting point. There are, however, additional issues with alk that is too high depending on nutrient values, but I'd only be regurgitating what I've read elsewhere.

I think alk swings will probably affect different coral types differently.

I would do nothing but let it decline on its own.
Just curious, what kind of change would you get concerned at?

dkh delta of 2.0? 2.5?

I‘ve always been more of a hands off and let things sort out (as they often do), as opposed to freak and do drastic adjustments.

One of the big reasons why people target '8.5' is exactly for this type of issue. That way an accidental overdose does not put your tank into the death sprial. Going into the 9's is not the end of the world and your tank will be just fine. Granted you may have one or two pieces that just says 'nope, im done'...but for the most part I think natural reduction is the way to go.

Do you know what your daily consumption is? It will tell you how long you have to wait..give or take.

Daily rate has been around .6 dkh but I think that has been slightly increasing. Btw measured it this morning and down to 9.2dkh. So figure be at 8.9 ish by later today. I guess that brings up another question on rapid rise. How long in a rapid increase will or does it effect corals? This would have settled back down in a day and half. Does it need to be high for days or even a hour rise will impact them. Just curious!
