I just received my overflow and it doesn't have holes in it. I was just wondering if thats normal or not.

If you mean holes for bulkheads- Not normal unless it is a hang on the back model for tanks that are Not drilled.

Contact seller. It is useless without holes. May be an oversight at manufacturer

A metal overflow for a reef tank? Sounds like a bad idea, what kind of overflow is it? Do you have a brand/model name? :)
I bought it off ebay, why is it a bad idea? Any idea where I can get an overflow with a be an animal setup?

I agree, pictures and maybe a link to the seller, never heard of a metal overflow for an aquarium...

Definately acrylic, and yes you will have to drill the hole/holes yourself, easy enough to do.

If you wanted something pre drilled you would be looking at Modular Marine, Eshopps, Reef Savvy Ghost Overflows, glass cages overflows, Synergy Reef Shadow Overflows ETC

Anyone know if it matters how far the holes are away from eachother in the bean animal setup?

Yes- just go slow when cutting hole.
