Overflow Plumbing FijiCube Mistake?

Did I dun goof? My gaskets on the drain lines are on the outside of the box. Not sure how I screwed that up but I am fairly sure they go on the inside of the box but I can't find any documentation/instructions on the install... On the through tank side I have one gasket against the glass and then one on the the inside of the drain section before the nut. I would appreciate any help to know whether I need to go buy more unions...

Yup unfortunately does go on the other side. Don't know if this is a guaranteed leak or not. Someone with more plumbing experience can help with that

I did the same thing on my sca build and it leaked. I switched gasket to the top, and poured a tiny bit of water in the overflow box ( not enough to go inside the bulkheads, but enough to go around them) and it didn’t leak.
I guess maybe you could try the same before redoing the plumbing?

I do like to do things correctly so if leaking is an issue I will bite the bullet and put the extra parts on a credit card until I start my job. Sucks because I think I have redone the plumbing twice... I even designed it in CAD and am an engineer so this is frustrating that I keep screwing up... Such is life.

Well PhD here and I had to remove a bulkhead because I accidentally glued a union on without it's nut and then didn't leave myself enough room to just cut and add another union. So yeah lol

Thanks for that. I beat myself up when I make mistakes so its nice to know others struggled as well. I guess its just a few unions to fix... better check my return piping haha.

Sorry to hear. I also had to redo my plumbing a few times, and even had to wait for new parts to arrive since no local stores had them at the time.

Luckily my job requires me to put together project plans and I always budget for screw ups. Sadly its usually for other peoples screw ups.

Don’t beat yourself up too much, I’m sure most of us have screwed up/ had to do things multiple times. We only learn from our mistakes. Just be glad you weren’t me and filled the entire tank /overflow with RODI water only to find it pouring out of your unions... yeah the wife didn’t like that one

Great news. I made two mistakes! The overflow box came with two gaskets which I actually installed correctly! The best mistakes are mistaking that you made a mistake. Happy that I will sleep well tonight now. Thanks everyone for the replies!

You can just cut @ the union, slip a coupler on and another small piece of pipe and butt 2 new unions up to the coupler. No sweat and takes just a few mins and 2 new unions not a lot.....

Lets praise the reefing gods that I only made mistakes that worked out just fine. Unions made my life so much easier. Does anyone see any significant issues? Next step is a leak test I guess!

I don't think anything sticks out wrong. What I do want to say is don't depend on that check valve. Make sure that your return is not too far under the water line. If you have that thing pointing deep and the valve fails you'll drain a quarter of your tank out of the sump and onto the floor

I did account for that so if the return fails then the sump should have plenty of space. Didn't think about how deep the loc-line would angle so I will do some quick math an ensure I am safe. Appreciate the reply!

Biggest thing I notice is your secondary drain is pretty low, it should be up around the top of the bulkhead that goes between the inner and outer box.

Also not sure if you double checked but your overflow gaskets at a very minimum needs to have one between the exterior box and the tank itself

I got the gaskets in place and the plumbing and flex hose cut and attached. I should be good to do on that.
As far as the emergency drain goes, I had no clue about that one. It is the stock pipe that fiji sent with the overflow but I can always but a different piece. Appreciate it!

I'm surprised they send it that low. That pipe is what sets the water level in your overflow box. The lower it is the louder it will be because the water has further to fall. If it's up closer to the top of the bulkhead it will help make things silent.

Yeah they want it to be a pure emergency drain. Personally with the two drain setup you should run pipe on both. So you raise the siphon drain a bit and raise the emergency a bit. You'll get less crashing that way
