Don't they make exterior latex?
I helped a buddy roll and tip his boat hull once , looked good

Yes, but I was only relaying how I finished my stand with excellent results. Don't know if outdoor latex will produce the same results as I am not a professional painter.

By far this is the best thing I've done for the inside of my stand. The spills and salt creep started peeling the top ply of the wood. I removed the sump, cleaned, removed loose wood and splinters, lightly sanded with a electric palm sander (only a short time so not to freak out my live stock too much). I mixed and poured a liberal amount, spread it and it basically self levels. You have to create some sort of dam to keep it from running out. Water can not penetrate the bottom. It will puddle and sit there until cleaned up or evaporates then the salt left behind can be wiped up. Wish i did the whole thing with this product. No harsh smell which would probably be bad for the fish. Don't forget the inside!

So as far as finish, what does everyone recommend? I was thinking semi-gloss.

Also, for bare wood, what grit do you recommend to get it ready to paint?

Semi gloss will give a shiny finish. That's what I used but the choice is yours. Some people prefer a flat finish.

As far as sand paper just buy a pack with a few sheets of different grit paper. You may still get a run in the paint which may need sanding. If the wood is smooth already a fine grit will work. You really have to choose sandpaper grit as you go. But I would think you will need a fine grit for most of your job.

Not to beat a dead horse, but why wouldn't you prime the outside of the stand with Kilz if you use it for the inside?

I believe Kilz is a latex primer? Not sure if you can use latex primer with oil based paint. I know you should not use a oil based primer with a latex paint but not sure the other way around. I would ask when you buy your paint. I wouldn't buy 2 different primers.

So....went to the hardware store and I think they gave me bad advice. They're saying neither latex nor oil paint will hold up for the outside of a saltwater tank stand and that I should use pool paint or boat paint (which are of course more expensive and don't look good). Also, they said that oil paint yellows. I think an outdoor latex would probably be fine. Your thoughts?

Bump. Is latex acrylic a good idea?

The Kilz I used was oil-based. They make both kinds.

Bump. See above. Does anyone have any thoughts about what the hardware store said about paint?
