Paying it forward. What a great thing to do!

Not only do I second that but I feel they should have an active member tank thread. We need to get a feel for the home these PIF offerings are going to. Honestly, if some one is new and doesn't abide by the basics, has massive HA etc then do you want to send them corals that are not going to fare well?

I think that it would be up to the person doing the PIF. Most likely members will pay it forward with deserving members that they have chatted with in posts and understand where they are currently in the hobby and skill level.

I don't think it needs to be a rule because I'm sure for most of us we aren't going to PIF to a new comer to the forum or similar. I also think that if you feel comfortable giving a coral to someone than you probably feel that they a deserving.

I was a part of a fly tying forum and we did a thing called fly swaps. A person, the swapmeister, would start a swap and give a category and every participant would send in enough flies for everyone and the swapmeister would divvy them out to all the participants. It would be a little harder with frags, but maybe possible. People might could organize it on a local basis or something; like, meet up once a month or every other month and bring enough frags of one type of coral for everyone and then divvy them all out. Its a cool idea and might be able to work. Just a thought.

For the members we are helping get some corals in there tanks because they are new or have a large tank to fill like me, or had some sort of disaster, it may take some time to grow out some respectable frags so that they too could and will PIF.

We could always discuss things like hey this guys tank crashed while he was at the hospital or serving in the military etc. we could come together and PIF to that person multiple times to get them back up and going. I'm sure that once they could they would PIF

I believe that the PIF sender should decide as to whom the recipient is going to be and for whatever reason they feel appropriate. As an example I chose Joe for his posting style here on R2R and after befriending him, Jeff (Castaway) I chose as to reward him for what I though was a very admirable way in starting out in this hobby.
Maybe as the sender choose someone you feel worthy and pm for participation interest, if so then posting up on the new forum as to whom and why that person was chosen. Followed up by the overall experience for both sides.

I have received a pay it forward from Todd. If you read the very first post on this thread it tells you all about it. What a great guy Todd is and a friend!

My problem is I have a large tank and I'm just a blue collar guy. I have been upgrading my equipment to more efficient stuff and haven't much coral in my big tank do to this fact. It was awesome for Todd to send me coral. I just have a hard time with these prices people are charging for corals.

Most of us have families to support so giving and receiving is a great way to take the burden off of us for paying high prices.

I don't have much but would like to do something local. Acro you and someone else is here in Florida maybe we could pay it forward with each other I have some frog spawn and some dragon eye zoa's etc.

I must say that those are gorgeous. I just put a blasto in my tank and love it.. but Joe is right, it doesn't have anywhere close to the pink yours have. My 5 year old keeps trying to have me get some more pink in her tank... Girls will be girls.

OK, here is a question no one has asked.... What do we say about the person receiving the coral, if they want to give something to the donee.... I know the purpose of the thread is to pay it forward and that generally means the person receiving only would pay for shipping, but I know if I was to receive a coral donation, I would only feel right giving the person at least a little something, especially since I will most likely not be able to pay it forward for about 6 months because my tank is so new and so small....

Thoughts? It would be totally up to the person receiving and they could do it by sending a check or something. There could be a rule that the person paying it forward would not expect anything in return... but that does not mean the donee could not give something to PIB... (pay it back)???

I like the idea of PIF to someone who had something happen beyond their control like the hospital, military, etc.... I would be down to PIF or if the thread decides as a group to help restock a tank for military, hospital, etc... and I dont have any to PIF, I would be willing to get a GC to help them pic their own. If this every happens, PLEASE LET ME KNOW

Like you said when you pay it forward you don't expect anything in return. But I'm sure the person would be happy to get a thank you card in the mail or something like that. Also coming on R2R and letting everyone know how nice it was to receive the items would be nice too.

We will get more on this tonight. I'm going to re work the rules and see if everyone agrees. I'll do this later tonight.

I am always giving away stuff. I think of it like this maybe one day I will be given something. I am a disabled veteran on an extreme budget, I never ask for anything in return. I just give wish everyone would do this as well. Hopefully this does catch on. It would be awesome to be on the receiving end of kindness one day. I have given all that I could give so that we can all enjoy freedom If this would be the mentality of all people just think what could be accomplished.

I am new to the saltwater aquarium world and have dove in head first to my first reef tank. I tried doing it on my own and tried to learn everything off the internet, only to fail time and time again. I discovered that a fellow coworker has been a saltwater enthusiast for many years. He took time out of his busy schedule to come over to my house and help me rebuild my sump/maintenance setup. In doing so, he also gave a me a 1150 gph inline pump and a complete 150 gal rated reactor to help with my phos and nitrates/nitrites issue.

I agree that individuals like this are rare now days and I value is wealth of knowledge and friendship. After 7 months and more dollars than I care to remember, I think I have finally got a handle on this all thanks to Fabien's help/advice. I am glad to see that there are others out there like Fabien that enjoy helping others.

I wanna tell eveyone make sure you have good cold packs and pack well. I just got a box from Drs F&S with bio spira that had 3 cold packs wrapped around it plus in a ziplock then in a styro envelope in a box packed tight with peanuts and 3 bottles of additives. The box was HOT inside, ice packs melted and warm, so was the bio spira The peanuts were so hot they were sticking to the additive bottles!

Dry ice will work better than ice or ice packs. Make sure it is wrapped in a good cloth or towel.

Wow what can I say but this thread has taken off in a great way. It sounds like we are going in the right direction. We need to do a few tests with the shipping. Seamus i'm very interested in your pvc package shipping. If the coral remains wet with enough water and is solid in the PVC were it cant be smashed up then I think its a go with that. Sure we would love to see some photos of ideas or your idea.

As stated earlier in this thread to yeild to me. I feel that this thread would be fine to post wanting to pay it forward on this thread. I also have no problem with a member asking for a paticular frag or coral they would like someone to donate to them.
I do feel that there is some variables that should be up to the person offering the corals or fish for that matter to whom they want to give them too.

recipients should be commited to reef keeping. Have maintained and are able to keep corals alive. Im all for people starting out but it would be nice to know that the person is able to keep them alive. in this case I would fully support the members just starting out buy sending corals that are great for beginers and are easy to care for instead of shipping out advanced care corals.

Last but not least.
For those of you with concerns about laws in your state not allowing trade or donations of corals. Conduct these through PM's you can post and say glad to have paid it forward today or something like that without any details etc.

Let's get this shipping going right and then we will know how to get this going efficently. I'm more than willing to use my accounts to ship and email labels. All i would require is that you cover the shipping fee and if any paypal fee. this would help us get a reduced rate. If we can get this going and we start shipping regularly than we get a better rate. Like seamus said i will link fedex account to my ebay account and receive a lower shipping rate.

Also want to give USPS a shot with priority express which is over night. they by far have the best retail rates of any shipper and possibly less with an account.

Last of all I have a mixed reef and I'm willing to do test shippments and evaluate the packaging on this thread so we can get this going. We can test out different shippers too. I dont currently have anything to send out that is of size for me to want to give away. I would only feel comfortable in sending out nice size frags in the 4 to 5 inch size and currently dont have any to do this with. I'm not a micro frag type guy. I also wont purchase any corals at the 1'' size whats the point in that, waiting six months to see it start to do something.
