Paying it forward. What a great thing to do!

I'm also thinking out loud.... This has the potential to become a bunch of people only looking for a hand out. I feel there's going to have to be a process of selecting people for pif instead of 5,000 people posting asking for free corals. Maybe make a list of people to send pif and once their selected remove then from the list for a set period of time.

I agree people will be beating down the doors so to speak. How about something like this:
If Rev makes a sub forum or even a private forum for PIF members we can do as you're saying. And we can invite others into the group that want to join that want to PIF with their corals and recipients as well. I don't think we should advertise what we are doing. It'll get out on it's own.

I think not having a begging section is a good thing...
Someone just picking someone they like to give something to seems to be working OK.

I believe that the PIF sender should decide as to whom the recipient is going to be and for whatever reason they feel appropriate. As an example I chose Joe for his posting style here on R2R and after befriending him, Jeff (Castaway) I chose as to reward him for what I though was a very admirable way in starting out in this hobby.
Maybe as the sender choose someone you feel worthy and pm for participation interest, if so then posting up on the new forum as to whom and why that person was chosen. Followed up by the overall experience for both sides.

Cheers/Mahalo, Todd

P.S. Maybe bring something back from Kauai to add to the list.

As far as how much one receives I think that would depend on the situation and those who have it to give and whether they want to or not. For example: Someone loses their tank due to a power outage from bad weather. We might all want to chip in. I do think it should be up to the giver. Or if the giver decides that after sending some coral to one individual and wants to again after 3 months (for example) wants to send that person more due to whatever reason they have it's ok too. But I do think that recipients should agree to become a part of the group and pay forward also. If they do not agree or we find them selling the coral they are out of the group. Also, the only way one can request a coral is if the member offers it openly. Otherwise we chose the recipent ourselves.

IDK, this seems fair to me and may protect us from being bombarded with requests.

I agree. Our reasons for giving should be our own :)

I'd for sure be interested in this I have a few tiny Kenya's and some pink gold zoas I can share soon. Just need some growth lol. Just got into reefing like 6 months ago. I'll take whatever and pay for shipping also
I would also need someone to teach me how to ship if anyone wants Kenya's or zoas.

OK so I haven't read the entire thread but I did read the last few pages. It sounds more like y'all are trying to organize a massive frag swap to me. That's cool and everything but not really my idea of pay it forward. If I give someone something I should expect nothing in return....ever. I would be willing to give newbies or tank crash victims free stuff but I don't see why I should ever receive anything more than a thanks unless I am in the unfortunate position someday.

You can't ask for a pay it forward....its not how it works. If people ask then they are expecting a hand out. The philosophy of the system is doing something nice for no reason to a complete unsuspecting stranger. The person doesn't want for the gift but needs help to obtain something nice.

It sounds like a neat idea and I would love to help. I just hope we can figure a good way to make sure the people aren't just wanting a hand out and truly deserve an act of kindness

All we want in return is for the recipient to do the same when their coral is ready to be fragged to anyone they feel worthy. No, it is not anything like a frag swap ;)

Ok, pardon the dumb question, but what does PIF stand for? I am still relatively new to the hobby, but my tank is doing pretty well for my corals I have started with. My Acan's already have a new head as well as my duncan's and I have only had them for about 3 weeks :D

I just set up my new light today and can't wait to put in all the frags I got from the cherry coral live sale... I am sure to need to start trimming soon with the size of my tank :D

PIF = pay it forward ;)

I think I would like to join in this if I could. I have some nice zoas and palys in growout as well as couple BTAs. I think the whole PIF thing gets too little credit and attention. I would also like to be able to help out someone who is just starting maybe get some of the stuff they want to have in the future a little quicker.

What about selling frags of pif corals? Say John Doe gets a box and in 4 months frags them and puts them up for sale. Is there going to be a specified amount of time he has to wait?
No that would be a no no! Although we can't stop someone for doing that but it would be implied that if you want to participate than you can only PIF any corals that some one PIF to you
