Petco and marine fish

stopped by mine earlier today..

almost all of their fish were clowns, pajama cardinals, and blue tangs

numerous dead fish in there just decaying. surely this doesn't please the kids when they walk up to the tank to see decomposing dory?

on the plus their coral frag tank had like 3 corals in it and there was a sign that said the frags were 50% off! one was an acro that was obviously dead wih algae all over it, hopefully they just stop ordering corals

this petco used to look better there was some girl that i'd see in there from time to time testing water and what not. i spoke to her a couple of times and she seemed knowledgeable, but admitted she was more into freshwater. i haven't seen her in like a year so i'm guessing she dipped and things have gone way downhill. their freshwater section always looks decent, fish not dead algae not overgrowing, so i'm guessing someone competent knows what they're doing with freshwater

Yeah I never understood why any petco could get blue or really any tangs. They probably even shouldn't have saltwater systems until they have someone who has a low enough shrink in freshwater.

This gets me wondering what do they feed their fish. Also side note the FW section is fairly decent in one petco I live near but the other petco I live near is just as bad as the SW side.

It is all variable, depends on the store. I often have them feed mysis to make sure the fish eat before I buy it. If I want to order a fish I just test the manager. She let me know when it come in.
The Petco in Corpus Christi is really a very reasonable LFS.

The tanks are connect vertically. The Petco in Corpus Christi treat sick fish and Mark the Quarantine and Not for sale.
According to the Petco here - they only treat if there is disease present. (not prophylactically)

Yes they don't QT. They treat the disease but marked the treatment tank as Quarantine (should mark it as fish under treatment)

I think that's intentional because if you see a fish being treated sign people will think all of your fish are sick.

They can set up qt tanks by blocking the flow to the tank and adding a powerhead and heater. However it really isn't ideal because petco doesn't let them do it with the larger middle tanks and will make them use the lower smaller tanks (believe they are 8 gallons completely full with no sand and rocks) and it gets dirty fast, but that's just if you notice disease.

No - its with copper, etc
Oooooohhhh they're in trouble lol. Glad to see it's still an ongoing practice of breaking the rules to keep fish safe.

Feel bad for the aquatics specialist or companion animal leader because they pay out of pocket for that and it isn't cheap buying all those medications

So some of you may or may not know I once worked at petco. I worked there when I turned 18 because what teenager didn't want to work at a pet store, and by the time I was 19 I was the aquatics specialist and I was in that role for 3 years while in college. I just wanted to give people a deeper look into how things worked at petco and point out some hypocrisies I see on this website, and no I don't expect to change any minds with this post. Now buckle in because this is a longer post

Petco; like any store; varies in quality depending on the staff that work there. There are some stores where they could care less about salt and only order clowns and damsels for their store because it's too much of a hassle, and sometimes even give blatantly wrong info to customers. At other stores you had people that really cared and would order more obscure or expensive fish, and probably know a lot more than your average joe about the marine aquarium. I myself gave out my personal cell for anyone that had questions or if they wanted me to order any specific fish for them. To the point where more than half of my phone contacts were just fish people. One of the things that annoys me about working at petco is one fish I have will come in underweight and we get the "what do you expect from a petco" yet people will go to a lfs where half their fish have ich, has no qt process whatsoever (essentially a treat once you see it store), and has told me he could care less about fish he cares far more about corals and inverts, and they have a 4.9/5 on google. One lfs I went to I heard an employee say a mimic tang was actually an angel and that derasa clams only live a few months in the aquarium, and of course while I was there there were diseases everywhere, and the fish where anywhere from 2-5 times as much as our fish... 4.5/5 on google.

Now that leads me into stocking. Yes petco has some really bad vendors. The one that comes to mind is apet, their sizes are inconsistent and the health (mostly just tangs) is questionable. For instance I ordered a koran angel one time and they send a sub adult where its getting its adult colors (that sold instantly since it was like 30 bucks). The next one I ordered was 2 inches long. However our other vendors are some of the exact same vendors that other lfs use and even some really popular fish like ora clownfish as an example, but because its petco everyone just goes "bad vendor" or "bad store" despite the fact a lot of the vendors are the same ones that your lfs uses because most of the vendors are regional therefore there is a high chance that your lfs uses some of the same ones.

Fish care... This one is painful. Essentially if you want to keep your job you either have to only order cheap fish and inverts so shrink isn't terribly impacted, or you have to break the rules... rules that get you fired. For instance petco doesn't let you treat with copper, or prazi, or metro, or anything anyone on here actually uses. They tell us to use herbtana and artemiss, and any petco employee will tell you that it doesn't work, I have even tried tripling the dosage and no improvements. So I bit the bullet and started buying the essentials out of pocket. Now no one will come into the store and test your tank for copper (thankfully). But because its against the rules if you get caught with it you will probably get fired, but since it is a rule you have no excuse to remove the rock and crushed coral they use, it can be a MASSIVE pain to get copper to therapeutic levels and maintain it. I actually only kept a really thin layer of crushed coral, and live rock (its more like concrete than actual rock). I was essentially running copper 24/7/365, except for the day before an animal shipment arrived I would throw a carbon pillow in the system to lower copper levels (which is why I prefer cupramine).

small side tangent here. I really love (sarcasm) the people that came into my store 3 months after getting a fish and demanding a refund on a yellow tang they got that potentially introduced ich into their tank and wanting compensation for the lost fish, not my fault you didn't quarantine a fish referred to as ich magnets.

That leads me into my final point. Even if you think petco fish are more prone to disease, you are going to (or you should) quarantine the fish regardless. If you see a healthy good size fish at petco, ask to see it eat, if its a good price get it as you are going to put it through the same quarantine process as every other fish you get from any other store. I told everyone that came in, how long a fish has been there, if its eating (and I'll show them... especially for things like lionfish), and how long its been in copper and if I've treated with anything else. I still tell them regardless to qt a fish even if its been in copper for 30 days I will tell them to do it regardless.

Small side note if a fish is mislabeled at petco, the employees probably know this. It is typically the vendor sending the wrong fish, the fish comes in under a name it has to sell under that same sku (however I used one of those labelers to put the actual name up). What really irritated me; especially when I was new because I would do a bunch of research beforehand; was to send something blatantly wrong like I order a dragon wrasse and in the bag IS A SCOOTER BLENNY. anyways

if you survived this borderline rant block of text I applaud you. Feel free to ask questions about deathco as even I call it from time to time.
I've often wondered about the livestock quality from there I've even considered actually picking some up because the price was right with that being said I didn't necessarily want to support what I assumed was basically a death camp for fish however I almost thought it might actually be like liberation appreciate the insight

Ask what they treat with. If they answer herbtana it's a death camp lol. Also I forget to mention this in the original post but never ever ever get regular osc clowns or clarkiis from petco. The former always have something (no exaggeration it was so bad I stopped ordering them and just ordered different designer clowns instead) and clarkiis always came in with velvet

I shop for my marine animals (fish mainly) from the Petco near me (Largo,FL) regularly. It’s one of the good ones. There are a few guys there that know fish keeping. Corals now too, it’s an ongoing learning process and they are only allowed to do so much. I even got one of them to start a reef tank. The tanks there look great, all the time. As a matter of fact, every single one of my fish came from that Petco.

On the other hand, I’ve gone to another Petco not too far away and their aquatics section is horrendous.

It really is about the employees that are there.

But, any of my serious coral shopping is at one of the LFS around me or I’ll hit up the reef club in the area (Tampa bay reef club). I’ll even take a drive to Orlando. WWC and TSA only an hour and a half away .

Got my banggai cardinals from Petco. They couldn't be healthier. Probably were aquacultured too. Now the fact that there were like 100 of them in a 20 long, well.. not so good.

Maybe we should make a yelp for fish stores and call it Felp.

Or....Kelp :p

I have fortunately not run across a bad Petco *knock on wood* and as I live in the boonies and am usually traveling on Sundays, Petco is open whereas every LFS in Utah is closed. Same for Southeast Idaho.

This is interesting; since ORA appears to be a big supplier I would have thought they get them from ORA. Or at least from the same company they get designer clowns; so it makes no sense, on the face of it, that their regular clowns would be in much worse shape than the designer clowns, or other captive bred fish.

There are like 4 vendors for clownfish. The regular osc clowns were not ora I forget the vendor name though

I got a beautiful juvenile orange shoulder tang at Petco bc it was mislabeled as a $9.99 yellow tang. It was still in the wholesale bag, I bought it as it was. I still have the fish 3 years later. I agree with you with everything you said. I know one Petco that was great with fish and tanks were super clean.... that being said that was 1 out of about 30 stores I've visited. Another 5 didnt do salt and the other 25 were just scary looking and had sick/dead fish and it was like eh its salt water it happens. Which I feel is the majority of the reason petco gets a bad rap... wish i had a guy like you in the place I went to(to get my dog food) bc I defility would have spent more time there.
