Petco isn't all bad!!

This is why most reef keepers don't support Petco. If you shop there you are supporting their cruel and inhumane treatment of their livestock. This is no different than buying a dog from a puppy mill. You might think you are "saving" the livestock, but you are simply supporting their inhumane treatment of livestock.
This isnt just my shirt i live by these words

Actually at my store, we take wonderful care of our animal's, im the aquatics specialist/zookeepers there, and tell me this if we didnt care about our animals would we rush a 3.99 feeder rat to the vet for labored breething, cuz we do.
Also i quarantine all sick and new fish i do freshwater dips on fish with ich and change my substrate anytime i see a fish with ich.

You're a good egg. ;) Thanks for making a difference.

BTW I have three beautiful fish that I purchased from Petco within the last 6 months.

I try man, i love what i do and when thats the case it makes all the difference i wish, that instead of getting upset for the poor quality of there local petco some of the more knowledgeable people would come and work with us with a few good reef experts on the corporate side it would make a world of diffrence.

Many of the big box pet stores get a bad reputation because of poor management and care.

But I'm here to tell you that there is hope!

I was in the local Petco picking up some cat food when I noticed that they had a saltwater section of fish that I didn't know about. I went over and saw a nice selection of fish and a young man taking the proper care and time to acclimate a new shipment of fish including some nice fairy wrasse.

I started talking with him and got around to asking him if he ever checked out any forums and to my delight he said he was on a place called Reef2Reef. :p

We had a nice chat and now I have a cool friend who sends me updates on new fish and sales. Just got a text from him today about a 20% off aquatics which promted this thread.

Anyway the skews on the fairy wrasse were all $20 so I took 5 of them home! Ha!

Moral of the story? There are some good caring people in all places and all types of stores! Let's encourage one another to be better and be there for one another! One of our very own moderators is a manager at one of these big box pet stores! @SeahorseKeeper

Cool story glad I read it!

Manassas & Dale City are all a crapshoot. Never what you'll find
Here in the DC area there are probably over a dozen Petco stores. All but one are varying degrees of crapiness. They should make the good one (Clinton MD) a training center for all the rest.

Most Petcos around me is ok-ish when it comes to their saltwater- they normally don't have much of a selection to begin with so I can't voice too much about them.

However, the one closest to my job has an employee that worked at the LFS for a long time, and he switched to Petco (mainly for the health benefits). Ever since he became employed by this Petco, I've noticed a HUGE difference in the fish quality and selection. I am always happy and impressed with the care this employee- I even voiced it several times to Petco to make sure they know what a difference this guy made. It's the only Petco I'll go into now.

the right person being there makes all the difference.

I actually have talked to the managers at my local Petcos about adding a QT copper treatment setup and they wanted to give me a job on the spot! But I actually just contacted corporate about it. They are losing money not only from us not buying but from all of their fish dying as well. This is a two way street that doing simple changes such as adding a QT system, shutting of lights during acclimation, and even adding a one way seeing glass so fish don't get spooked so much can help. I hope they listen to me or us as a community.

yeah that is good to here I understand how ever that the systems near me are broken up into 3 different segments. I talked to the managers of the stores in getting 1 of the those 3 systems (I believe that is 8 tanks) to be bare bottom copper based QT systems. This is little change will work wonders.

#1 It will show experienced reefers that Petco is doing EVERYTHING POSSIBLE in saving infected fish

#2 It will entice us to buy their fish

#3 It will save the fish saving them more money than copper would cost and save upkeep time of those 8 tanks

That's great news! Unfortunately, I see a great brain drain here from a number of unrelated issues. Inspired to check out my stores now.

I was in Petco today to pick up some Nassarius snails and snapped a pic of there frag tank.

It's hard to tell from the pictures. Could be that there is just too much stuff floating around in the water, could be velvet, could be flukes. I would need a better picture to be able to tell. A Freshwater dip of 5 minutes would tell you if it's flukes or not.

I did a fresh dip for about 5 min and half way thru he lost some of the pigment in his skin in some places like his face also he has ich.

No flukes came out though? If not - and again the pictures arn't giving me much to go on here, or maybe too much) I would say he has a bacterial infection along with the ich. There could be other things going on as well. Are you allowed to use antibiotics at petco? Something like kanaplex or furan 2? Well, this wont help if you can get rid of the ich as well so that may be a problem too. It's been a long time since I worked at a petco so I can't remember the policies
