Thinking about ordering this at Petco . Such a great price but will be worth it? Anyone have experience?

Most people will tell you to stay away from petco.

My personal experience with the couple that around me, they are fine as long as you plan on doing QT.

Never ordered anything online from petco(livestock), but have read a few posts of people that have. It seems they are shipped directly from Quality Marine, and petco never actually touches the livestock.

Yeah it’s going in QT for sure. I’ll just order lol

Petco can be hit or miss with the livestock. I have 3 stores in my area and most of the time the tanks are not managed and the livestock is sick. It seems like when the fish first come in they are actually healthy. Its what happens to them after they have them a day or 2. Since your cutting them out of the equation I think for that price it is worth a shot. I will say Anthias are one of my favorites but not exactly the easiest to keep "long term". They are eaters and have to be fed multiple times throughout the day in smaller portions. When I had them and could feed them a good variety several times a day, I was able to keep them for quite a while. The typical once a day feeding schedule just doesn't work on these fish (from MY experience anyway).

if you're ordering direct ship to you, I would think would be better than having the fish put into a store's system. QT the fish, would like to hear how it goes.

Your LFS can't get you lyretails for a similar price?

As common as lyretails are in the hobby, I would take that screen shot to my LFS and see if they would match it.
Pretty sure my LFS would just match that price rather than lose out on a potential fish sale to petco.

It’s going to be drop shipped. Most likely from Quality Marine, but there are 6+ distributors they work with.

I have had success asking my local store to order and keep in bag (not add to their system). They call when box arrives (with they’re stock order) and I pick up ASAP. No obligation to buy, so DOA is a non-issue.

This obviously only works if you have a store relatively close.

They can’t get a male lyretail but they can get the females and they don’t look all to well when I see them . I have 3 pet stores but none usually haven them in stock probably because of the poor shipment

My only LFS they have them usually looks unhealthy so Petco might have a better chance

I’m having them ship and I have an auto feeder . Going to be my first experience with them and I did a lot of research before hand

Then by all means go for it and be sure to report back how it turns out.

I've often thought about ordering something from them, but never have.

I will agree its worth a shot, My LFS has gotten several batches of males in recently and they all look horrible. Cant hold themselves upright in water, Lethargic, heavy breathing. Im not sure where they get them from if its a distributor thing or its effects of how they were collected, possibly with cyanide. Whole batch doesnt last two days. It seems to be becoming very common these days with male lyretails.

I REGRET not buying more from Petco. Ordered on Sunday and arrived Tuesday. This male came in at 3PM at 98 degrees. I was so scared but he came in healthy and already eating within 1hour of acclimation. He’s temporarily in a 13g tank for QT for a day and then he’ll move to a 45G to complete his QT process. Great experience so far and now I will lose $60 of shipping because I will have buy his females.

Looks like they have 7 day guarentee and they refund your money. Honestly really good if you don't mind drop shipped fish. No store credit to deal with.

He's a beauty! I hope it works out with him and the females!

A little late maybe but MOST Petco stores have a refund policy but they fail to inform you that it does NOT apply to saltwater fish. Now this may be different for fish shipped directly to you, but in-store purchases of saltwater fish are typically exempt.

Another thing worth mentioning: if you can order it from the website, build a decent relationship with the aquatics manager. Petco has ordered fish special for me and had it shipped to the store with their order so no additional shipping charges were charged. They received the fish, floated the bag, and notified me that they were in. I picked them up still in the bag.
