A little late maybe but MOST Petco stores have a refund policy but they fail to inform you that it does NOT apply to saltwater fish. Now this may be different for fish shipped directly to you, but in-store purchases of saltwater fish are typically exempt.
Another thing worth mentioning: if you can order it from the website, build a decent relationship with the aquatics manager. Petco has ordered fish special for me and had it shipped to the store with their order so no additional shipping charges were charged. They received the fish, floated the bag, and notified me that they were in. I picked them up still in the bag.
Looks like if you order more than $139 in aquatic life you get free shipping. Not sure how many females you need/wantI REGRET not buying more from Petco. Ordered on Sunday and arrived Tuesday. This male came in at 3PM at 98 degrees. I was so scared but he came in healthy and already eating within 1hour of acclimation. He’s temporarily in a 13g tank for QT for a day and then he’ll move to a 45G to complete his QT process. Great experience so far and now I will lose $60 of shipping because I will have buy his females.
Shipping is an extra $54 which adds up with the “conditioned” fish. Shipping for Petco is only $30 and my experience has been great and I doubt they will hesitate to send me another or a refund if something goes wrong. I’m planning to get the females from my LFS instead though. Not sure why you would buy from me Petco when you can get them from Dr. Reef QT for $10 more per fish for the females
No wonder it came in at 3 pm but all was well despite high temperaturesFYI there is another thread that goes into greater detail on the shipping here: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/petco-online.915600/
I do realize the OP has already ordered and received their fish.
Something from the other thread to take note of is that they use UPS Next Day Saver, which is a "by the end of day" service rather than the overnight that arrives by 10am. The extra added time could be a concern and unfortunate there isn't an option for shorter ship time.
Yeah for sure. I'm really glad you had a great experience. No wonder it came in at 3 pm but all was well despite high temperatures
I was planning to get enough for the full free shipping but I hesitated and just got the male. Should’ve just got it all together and saved me $30 and a few more dollars buying it from my LFS. Now I have to wait until my LFS restocks the female this week to medicated all my fish together.Looks like if you order more than $139 in aquatic life you get free shipping. Not sure how many females you need/want
Only thing that can fix this is extra $$$. Which is hard because next day shipping is already expensive .Yeah for sure. I'm really glad you had a great experience.
I kinda wonder if the "end of day" thing gives UPS or FedEx an excuse to just delay to the next day if they get too late in the day. And I suspect that may be the case, considering how many times I hear that the shippers have delayed entire days.
This is outrageously maddening to me considering these are animals suffocating in bags. I've gotten to be better friends with the owner of my LFS and he always keeps me in the know on what happens with his fish orders and to be honest, I wish I never knew what was going on with these shipping issues. It's kinda sickening.
No, I got 3 females at a LFS instead because it’s cheaper. The male is doing great and they’re all still in quarantine . The male has lost color due to diet. They all only eat mysis shrimp. I’m trying to get them on pellet and flakes but no luck so far.Did you end up getting more anthias from Petco? How's the male doing?
What Petco do you go to? I go to the one in Cibolo and their SW department has a decent healthy selection. Yesterday I picked up an ORA Yasha goby and 2 banggai cardinals for $90.People always trash Petco. The one near me has a very cool salt dept. May very from store to store but I like the place.

Our Morgan Hill, California store is all hit and miss. When I started the hobby I was a regular customer. They had one very interested employee who owned his own tank at home and assistant manager was also into saltwater tanks. The displays were always clean and in good shape. My yellow tang, fire shrimp and angel fish all came from them about 8 years ago, they are all still alive. I have been there recently, but it is not the same. Dead fish, very low salinity levels, not very knowledgeable employees ( didn’t tell apart a Nassarius snail from Hermit crab), don’t take it wrong they were all very pleasant and corrected their mistakes when pointed out. I am still happy to shop from them with some caution. My local LFS generally carries corals not much selection of clean up crew, my tank is FOWLR with anemones so frags are not much use for me, can’t keep them alive.People always trash Petco.
