What is acceptable for a 24 hour pH swing in our aquariums?

What is the pH swing over a 24 hour period in your aquarium?

If I dose ALK from 10pm-6am on the hour I can keep my swing to 0.10 every 24 hours. If I dose every 4 hours the swing is around 0.17 each day.

Is that too much of a swing?

No worries that should not hurt a thing.

try dripping Kalc at night it will help keep your PH stable with very little swings at all, When done correctly.

You said you didn't want to dose kalk. I don't blame you. I've dosed kalk and then stopped and did frequent water changes. Then started dosing kalk again at night. My clams definitely do better when I do dose. My pH ranges from 8.3 - 8.4.

Never said I didn't want to, just not ready at this point in time to. LOL That's a completely different topic... I want to add a Calcium reactor and start dosing Kalk then.

Just curious about pH swings as of right now. Thanks for the info everyone. Keep them coming.

Nice! That's exactly was I was looking for. Thanks Lindsey! You answered many of my questions in both of those graphs!!!

your very welcome. My frag tank has more fluctuation since it is not on the Carx so the Alk is naturally lower. I really need to do a better job with it. its a bit neglected. but as you can see it is VERY cyclical.

be careful Ryan chasing pH leads to more harm than good..

Thanks again fellas. I was just curious. Wasn't planning on changing anything. Curiosity got the best of me is all. :)

True, I wouldn't be worried about a swing like that at all.

At least your pH doesn't look like mine.

My AC3 is in the fritz again. Lol

woah mike.. thats a bit low... its either in desperate need of calibration or you are melting your substrate in the tank.

Yeah, it's acted up for a while. I've calibrated and even put new probes on it and it will work fine for a couple of months and then just start going crazy. I really don't trust the readings even when they are where they should be. It might start working fine again tomorrow also. I know I need new probes but I'm thinking of just getting a new Apex. I meant to get one during the black Friday sale but didn't get around to it.

I've went through all of that. Moving probes, unplugging everything else, and even just putting the probe in a cup of tank water so no interference from stray voltage. I'm not too worried about it right now since I'm planning on getting an Apex soon. It's been messed up for a very long time. It was very dependable for several years but then the pH reading got a mind of it's own.
