I have tried most all makers. I agree that internal pumps are just not user friendly.
It all comes down to bubble size, air volume, and contact time. Otherwise they all do the same thing.
If a person notices most manufactures do not utilize the options for contact time. You have a cylinder and you want the circulating water to stay as long as possible before reaching the neck. It should be a skimmer spec... contact time.
Design is key.
