Nice job. Glad to hear he is still alive. If you hit any major organs he would not be alive for very long. I have never used sodium chloride, only iodine.

It is not uncommon for any fish after venting to be breathing heavy, especially a Wrasse.

5 min after... I turn the pump completely down, but he was still very weak so the pump almost sucked him in, but no worries its all good...

Yes! I think that even if he dies near future I bet he feels way better laying in the rocks instead floating on top of the tank with his back and have mouth being exposed to air... Thank you!

Great work. Sodium chloride 0.9% is otherwise known as normal saline. It is used as an irrigation solution on humans as it is isotonic to our bodies. It’s essentially weak saltwater and itself has no antiseptic properties. Speaking strictly regarding the saline, I doubt you did anything to hurt the animal, but seeing as the water it swims in has a higher salt content, it likely didn’t help with infection prevention. It does have a somewhat acidic pH, so that in theory could have helped. In any case, good work.

He is alive! Swimming funny though... Still weak, not eating... He swims than rest, thsn swimm than rest... When he is resting on the sand he turn upside down... He looks at me with his big beautiful blue eyes and think what the heck did you did to me...!
Today is my birthday so maybe he just couldn’t kick the bucket on my B day to make me cry and is waiting lol
Either way he is not floating on top... Hope he starts eat tomorrow as he didn’t eat now for a week almost... What do you think? When is your baslet started eating???

If he made it through the night that’s a good start. He’s probably just completely wiped from not eating and using all of that energy trying to swim and right himself.

This might sound crazy, but if you have plain neosporin and can catch him without stressing him out too much (I wouldn’t chase him around the tank for it)... you could put a small dab of it over the wound as a topical antibiotic. It is the same active ingredient as Neoplex antibiotic for fish, just in ointment form for people boo-boos

I wouldn’t beat yourself up over it, really. Surgery is done in the most pathogen-free environment as is achievable, and still people get infections following procedures. So long as the needle was sterile, you gave it the best chance. Topical antiseptic would hopefully prevent infection from the “skin” from being introduced, but would do nothing if you happened to knick something internally.

I find this thread very interesting and I commend you for doing what you’ve done. I really hope it works because I agree, the fish would have likely died without some type of intervention. I’m anxious to see how this works out but no matter what I think you did the right thing.

From my experience i have had fish eat after 3 days after venting all the way till almost 2 weeks which ended up being a Wrasse. They just don't recover as quickly. But if he is alive that is a good. Just keep an eye on the injection site. If it starts to swell up, change color you will need to treat it. I use alcohol on the injection site before venting and iodine right after. Keep the flow low.
