Guys, I wish I was kidding. Started with 4 a while ago, this male emerged and he killed the rest one by one, over a few months period. Now, he has been bullying all my other fish. my helfrichi went into the den because of that and onky comes out for 2 min once a week, just to be chased back. Only clowns and borbonious push back on this anthia. I added a few new fish today and he has been harassing the heck out of them. Some have hit the lid a few times trying to escape the chase.

i have tried a feeder box to lure him in, he is too smart. also, whenever i lower the net inside the tank, he hides and waits. At this point, I am seriously willing to kill him! What can I do, short of breaking down the tank?! Wish I was kidding, I am ready to get rid of him, no matter how brutal the method is. Thoughts?

Grenade?

Just kidding. A fish trap usually works. Sometimes it just takes a while. If using a trap, leave it in the tank for a few days so Mr. Anthias gets used to it being there. Feed the tank through the trap. Eventually, you'll get your fish caught. Re-home or back to the LFS. No need to outright kill him even if it seems like a good idea at the time

Thanks, I have tried the trap, kept it in for almost two weeks. Every single fish was in there except for him.

it seems like a good idea all the time! Lol. This fish is evil. Remember the movie Omen? Well, he is a reincarnation of all of them combined.

I had some peppermint shrimp like that once.. that story is for another soapbox..
I will say however that my Harlequin Tusk had a nice meal when I finally caught them...

Dont kill it!

Have a flyfishing shop/store in your area?
Hook and a work?

I have done it with fish, havet to use a tiny barbless flyfishing scud hook, it works great if the fish is the dominant eater of the tank anthias is going to be a tough hook as it's going spit it out immediately if it decides to eat it.

Use maybe a size 20 nymph hook?, and some mysis?

What I did was not feed for a day, wait to feed the next day and have a net big enough to cover a big area. Okay put the net in and feed a little, wait for the desired fish to come to the surface then feed more and turn off the display lights when it gets close to your net and scoop it. This will prevent the fish from seeing the net and getting away.

I had a similar experience with a trio. After killing off the other two Bartletts it tormented my wrasses so bad that one jumped out and the other disappeared. Traps didn’t work so I finally used egg crate to divide 1/3 of the tank and then pulled out everything until I was able to net it out. I then took a chance and put it in a FOWLR tank with other wrasses, clowns and angels and it has become a model citizen. They are beautiful fish when behaving.

Try a sabiki rig. Look for one that will be small enough to fit in his mouth, and that doesn't have barbs. Just drop the line in during feeding. Used this method to catch a trigger once. Worked like a charm.

This is what you want. Trim down to a single hook, and trim the frills and stuff. You could even put s piece of Mysis on it....

I depends what you feed, but you can get him accustomed to sinking pellets, then place a net in the tank and always drop pellets into it. Within a couple of feedings you will be able to remove all the fish from the tank. Also apparently fish cannot see red light, if he sleeps in an accessible area you could just net him in his sleep using red light to illuminate the area for yourself while keeping him unaffected.

These hooks are incredibly small and I have used them on quite a few fish. They may actually be too small if the anthias is full grown. I’ve used for angels, wrasses, and butterflies in the past.

I used barbless midge fly and frozen mysis bait. Didn’t feed tank for a week. Caught harem that way for going fallow some years ago.

Not to get off track here but how did you catch your peppermints eventually? I’m battling that at the moment. They’re too smart and too fast. Tried bottle traps, net and even catching by hand because they’ll come up to me and pick away if I stick my hands in.

I have a guaranteed method to catch him.....as long as you know where he sleeps evernight. Wait until the tank lights go off....make sure the tank is in total darkness for a couple of hours. Turn the lights on full blast.....the fish will be stunned to the point where you can almost reach in and grab him with your hand. Again, this only works if the fish doesn't wedge himself up in a rock at night so that you can't grab him. I normally scout the night before with a flashlight to find where the fish sleeps.

I bought a small.shrimp net...its circular and small and its long like a sock. As they scoot backwards to get away they just go deeper in the net instead of scooting out like they do a square net. Worked like a charm!

I know people who use red nets because the fish can’t see them. I can catch almost every fish I own by hand so can’t tell you from experience, I just know of people who swear by them. Good luck catching the terror. He sounds stubborn.
