Hello,

I have narrowed my search down to two contenders for an RO/DI system for my home. They are the BRS 75gpd Plus 5 stage RO/DI system and the AquaFx 100gpd Platinum Barracuda RO/DI system. Which would you suggest and why?

I have a whole house water softener system installed as well, a RainSoft EC5 that will be filtering all my water before it even hits the RO/DI system.

All input is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Edit: Forgot to mention this is to help maintain my Red Sea Max 250 reef tank. I live quite far from the LFS, so this is really a necessity at this point.

I have the aquafx and had to buy the chloramine blaster kit. My lfs sells the replacement cartridges. I have had it about a year now and no problems. However i did buy the triple tds meter to monitor the filters. No more guessing when the filters need changing.

I’ve got a system from BRS and love it. Personally, I purchase everything through BRS. Great service and products. I’m a big proponent of supporting businesses that really support the hobby and BRS leads the pack.

Personally I would go with the 75GPD system, partially because it's BRS, but partially because it's a 75GPD membrane. The 75GPD system may be slower, but the 75GPD membrane has much better rejection rates. I would also add another DI canister so that you can run a dual DI stage. As DI resin reaches the end of its capacity, it can start to release ammonia, silicates and other weakly-charged ions back into the product water. By running two stages, you can see when the first canister is depleted and still have your water going through a full cartridge full of resin.

Just my $0.02 however.

When you say "for my home", will this be used for something in addition to supplying water for your RSM250?

I just bought an RO/DI system as well. I also buy everything from BRS, but after extensive research I went with a 4-part 100 GPD system from Buckeye Hydro. I love it!
First off, water purification is all they do. They custom build each system for each customer, based on options laid out on their very thorough website (www.buckeyehydro.com). Or you can call them and they will help you--very nice guys! They use 1 micron sediment filters, while BRS uses 5 micron sediment filters. BRS uses 5 micron carbon blocks, but Bukeye uses 0.5 micron carbon blocks. Both use the DOW Filmtec membrane. And the prices are great.....

I would go with the 100 GPD RODI for a couple reasons, first it is going to take two + plus to refill the tank in the event you had to create that much salt. (I have about 300 gallons of volume and run 100 GPD, it was cold when I filled my tank and it took 4 days to fill the tank because production goes down when the water is cold.)

Next, you will end up plumbing this up to the Fridge because you too will want to enjoy the zero TDS water it produces. Not that you will drink 100 GPD but when you are making water it will also produce more faster.

If I get the 75 brs. 40+ psi is fine. But if u getting the 150brs. U need 75psi-90psi to do the proformace. That will cost extra 150 buying. Booster pump. Make sure your psi right now before selecting the 75 or 150

Potentially. I might break off with a tee before the DI system for RO drinking water at some point but it’s doubtful.

I intend on teeing off of the washer machine supply (3/4” pipe I believe) in the garage and keeping a 55gal trash can filled with RO/DI water at all times. Being that it’s from such a large supply I think it will be fine.

I have the AquaFX 100 and am happy with it. The BRS system is fine too but it produces a bit less and uses 5 micron pre-filters (which can be changed if desired).

You need 60 psi for the 150...

I’ve had great luck with my BRS 150 unit. I do run a booster pump. I like being able to produce a lot of water if needed for mainly reasons.

That is not accurate, I have never heard of line pressure from city water above 50 PSI, My line pressure is 40, I do have a booster pump (and clearly stated in the directions were to never run the pump above 60 psi as it will cause damage to the membrane) There is a nominal performance difference with the pump on relater to gallons of water produced, however, I don't measure the amount of waste water I generate so I cant comment there. Also my water is zero or one TDS with or with out the pump.

I have the 150, and it says 50Psi. Unfortunately mine clocks it at about 45psi. System still operates fine, but the DI resin gets used a bit faster. I have looked into this through BRS and other places. I personally can't justify $100 or so for a booster pump I will have to turn down so as to not have too high of a PSI. I got around 200 Gallons of 0tds output water from the DI resin, and it now needs replaced. I am getting 2tds in it's current state while I wait for my order resin. My TDS is reads at about 15.
