Please help to ID this

So many lighting options now though so look around at any local fish stores and see how they look in person if possible. Biggest limiting factor is what will be the budget on the lights.
Take into account all of the other products for the tank you might need before making the decision as you dont want to blow the budget

can you double check salinity possibly meant 1.027? sorry saw this was addressed now, but 3 clowns is not recommended and usually ends with 1 dead overtime

Ive used it to fill in most of the space then capped it off with prettier looking sand but honestly it works fine and neither of my leopard wrasses have been phased by it and burrow just fine. Once algae and corals start to grow substrate look becomes less of an issue

It is 1.027. I fat fingered it and missed the 0. Would it be too late to add another mini to even them out? They only had 3 in their tank and that’s why I had the oddball amount.

No clownfish are very territorial for the most part. Usually you only want 1 pair per tank unless the tank is huge. There will of course be exceptions and clowns that tolerate it but not for the most part

Roger that. Maybe I’ll get lucky with those three. I know petco had just them three together. One sorta hangs out by himself but does venture around the other two. They never really face off or anything.

So my wife bought two of these at Petco the other day and we put them in. She couldn’t remember the name of them and today I noticed this one is starting to turn white. Tank is cycled. Salinity is 1.27. No ammonia or any of that. Currently only have 3 miniature clowns in the tank and that’s it. Could any help? Thank you.

Bottom looks like a mushroom and is in a very basic environment and would like to see a couple of full tank photos and what filters are you using and type of salt - test kit - sand - and lighting are you using?

This is what I ended up ordering. Once I get the sand and rock(if they have it) in there and get the other stuff out, I should be fine for coral then correct? I just want to ensure I take the right steps. Thank you all for guiding me on the right path. I really appreciate it.

I don't like to comment because I've only had a reef for two years, so yeah, very much still learning myself... but, I believe Hydnophora Corals are SPS and if so, not a good idea for a new reef tank, they have very specific requirements that a new tank just can't supply. As a a noob, I've found it best to buy my corals from sellers that offer lots of legit information about a specific coral along with the photo of the coral, that makes doing research before you buy much easier. My absolute favorite coral seller is Tidal Gardens, great info about corals on their web site and they have very informative videos on many specific corals on their YouTube channel, also, I haven't found cleaner corals anywhere and that's hugely important because hitchikers on corals is yet another complex and difficult subject and something you want to avoid as much as possible, especially in the begining. BTW, I don't have any conection to Tidal Gardens at all, that man just happens to run a very tight ship! There are other coral vendors that supply good information and corals, he's just my fav. You are so lucky to have found R2R, I have learned sooo much on here, I hope you have success AND fun with your tank!

Does your petco have purple rock in their saltwater fish tanks? If so it’s for sale. Cheap too and decent stuff

That dry rock you are talking about will probably trigger cycles or at least algae outbreaks.

The petco rock is at least cycled. Every petco is different but mine sold in flat rates for small medium and large pieces.

The filter is fine. The gravel…it’s for freshwater. Reef sand helps maintain ph and is better. Gravel ends up trapping food and waste particles snd snails have a hard time digging in it to clean

Do you have a light in mind?

Had a chance to swing to petco in between a wedding and a sick 1.5 year old. They had the live rock on sale. Grabbed a couple pieces and will convert everything over later tonight. Thanks for all of the help folks.

Every petco is different and the condition of the tanks is dependent on the aquatics dept manager. Mine Happens to be reslly good. I was shocked at their live rock prices and understand it’s not Fiji or tonga branch, but for cycled seeded rock, it was really nice and priced very well.

Everything has been switched over. I def need to get more rock, but I think in the long run I’ll be in better shape. Does this all look ok for now? I was able to get 2 blue-legged hermits, and 3 nassarius snails as well to go through the sand. Fingers crossed everything will go better now. I do have a light on the top that wasn’t on since I took this last night. The K7 minis should be here in a week or two and that’ll solve the last problem. I figured the Amazon light I had would work for right now. I did get some copepods as well from petco and add some phyto as well. Thanks again for all of the tips and help to get my tank to where it should be.

I snagged a pic when I got home from work. Relatively basic setup but done the correct way this time. Hermits seem active and I seen one snail out and about scoping out the sand. Other 4 cerith snails should be here Wednesday at some point and I’ll let it go other then maybe some more petco live rock if they restock it. Fingers crossed this gets everything in line. I’m guessing I should now wait for the full algae state before going any further with anything correct?

Agree. Don’t do any coral until all this is fixed. It’s throwing money away and the coral loss will negatively affect the tank

I’ve actually had them in there since 7/22. Diatom state had started then I created issues I fixed this weekend. So fingers crossed the diatom stage will just pick up again.

Sounds like you're almost ready for coral and an anemone for those clowns when everything is stable! Happy to help if you need any recommendations for hardy/ starter corals!

I have a test kit for ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, general hardness and alkalinity. Is there anything else I should get? Salinity is steady at 1.027. Ph was at 8.32 a little bit ago.

If you want to keep SPS or LPS corals I recommend getting Magnesium and Calcium (I recommend salifert). also Phosphate (I recommend ULR Hanna Checker)
