What is your unit? 75 gallons per day? At most you wasted 40 gallons. No worries on the bill. Definitely get a proper shutoff switch. FYI: A float valve by itself will not cut it.

75 gpd is the production rate. The use is 3-4 times that. Still not an excessive amount of water, but more than you'd want and it uses up the membrane.

My kids would shut the alarm off and my dog would easy the bread! Lol

They sell cheap water detectors that will go off like a fire alarm when they get wet. I also set IPHONE alarm, plus leave something like a loaf of bread on my pillow to remind me to shut the unit off before bed. (Sometime the kids grab the phone and turn alarms off when they are playing with it!)

Haha I like the bread on the pillow idea. It reminds you to turn the water off and then if you get hungry during the night you can have a snack.
