Plumbing manifold design

Those big DD tanks limit you with the dual overflows. While running a Herbie would be quieter, safer and allow more flow, trying to run dual Herbies would be very tricky. You'd be constantly adjusting. I agree that keeping it regular old Durso (while loud) is your best bet. As far as manifolds, I run one off my return and love the fact that I have one less pump that I have to clean or worry about failing. I also like your idea of running a second return pump for redundancy. While you can always toss in a heater if there is a problem, it makes it difficult if it fails when you're not home! Whether you run two off each, or all four off one is really up to you. It doesn't matter how much flow you run through each pump, since the two together determines your sump flow rate. That said, if they're not similar flow and you're using lockline returns to focus your return flow, some locklines would have more flow than others.

I'm a plumber by trade (40 years), an aquarist for about 20 years. I support the idea of each pump serving 2 individual returns, preferably one each at opposite ends of the tank. You could run each pump at +/- 75%. My thought being that with the redundancy, if one were to fail, you could turn the good pump up to 100% temporarily and you'd still have good flow/coverage while you worked to replace the bad pump. Just my thoughts.
Those were my thoughts too, thank you!

Thank you for the reply, I appreciate the advice. However this is not a DD tank. It's 84" x 24" deep and 30" high. It's standard dimensions. I'm not really concerned with noise, it's in the dining room and I personally don't mind the noise of a tank so I think I'll stick with the standard durso overflow. I was just concerned with getting enough flow.

@crusso1993 can you please explain how running all the 4, 1" holes as full drains and having returns outside up the back of the tank could cause problems in an emergency as you said?

You know, now that I think about it, I cannot foresee an emergency scenario that could arise. I would think the probability to be too high.
BTW - I am still hopped up on two forms of night time cold/flu meds and some form of fish tranquilizer! Still thinking a bit fuzzy...

Lol I can wait until your thinking clearly then! Hope you feel better soon
