I'm sure this is a dumb question but on unions, you do not need to glue it down right?

The slip portion, yes. The threaded portion, no.

When I plumbed my last sump on the 100g, I had about $350 worth of plumbing from BRS laying at my feet. Buy more than you think you'll need and return what you don't. I hate making trips (or ordering again) after I start a project.

haha, thanks! I hate that part too but even if I had that much of plumbing parts at my feet, with my luck, I'll be missing something.

I'm still trying to figure out the union part. I thought it wouldn't need to be glued down since that's how you would replace it if needed. Trying to find a video to see how people use it

The union ends glue to the pipe but the union is a 2 part fitting that splits in half when you twist it

Inside each half are two rubber gaskets creating a water tight seal

Or keep the extra plumping supplies on hand, I like to keep everything on hand to replace any given section should a fail happen down the road…
Pro tip, if you record all your plumping measurements on a diagram and keep it with your supplies you’llbe ready to fix anything in the middle of the night should need arise

quick question, why only 1 gate valve and not one on the other drain as well?

Because the second drain is your emergency drain and should always be wide open for emergencies

I would encourage you to research the different kinds of drain setups and get a good understanding of why they function the way they do.

I'm at the same stage as you are and although I am doing mine a little differently, I found that Lowes in my area has some great barbed fittings (slip and thread) but home depot did not. I am leaving my bulkheads with fiber enforced vinyl tubing secured to a barb and going to a gate valve secured to a barb. So it can be just a short section of tubing between the bulkhead and your first section of pvc and you won't have to change your bulkheads. As Erin1971Texas said make em tight.

Nice! Mine will be pretty similar. I don't plan on using much of that braided vinyl tubing. Just barely some so I don't have to mess with changing the bulkhead lol

Call around, my local ace has a great selection of scheduale 80 , better than most of the big guys, but it’s location to location so good luck…otherwise you can order them online

FYI, for a drain, schedule 40 is fine. Maybe those will be easier to find.
(some use 40 for all their aquarium plumbing anyway but since drains aren't under pressure, 40 is definitely safe here...)

Thanks! I ended up just ordering from BulkReefSupply. Tried a few stores locally but nothing. I used schedule 40 for everything and looking at the PSI, I figured that was plenty
