What stuff are you using?i never got on top of po4 until i got rid of all gfo type adsorbers, saved a bomb, and use low dose liquid po4 stuff.....my Hanna ULR phosphorus now always reads 0. NOPOX will never reduce PO4 in my experience....but it is effective (ifexpensive) on NO3

Quick Question about section Phosphate Reduction via Calcium Phosphate Precipitation. If having large ph swings could this be causing any of the bonded phosphorous to be getting back into the system?I presume he means lanthanum.

Soluble Metals to Bind Phosphate
There are several approaches that add soluble metals to bind and precipitate phosphate. The most popular involves adding lanthanum, which precipitates as lanthanum phosphate and/or lanthanum carbonate (which itself may contain some lanthanum phosphate). The lanthanum approach is widely used in the pool industry to reduce phosphate, and seems to often work well in aquaria. It is also very inexpensive, using products such as Seaklear (make sure it is a pure lanthanum version as mixtures with other metals also exist). Note that this method reduces alkalinity, as removing carbonate and phosphate as a lanthanum precipitate will reduce alkalinity.
One way to use it is to drip is slowly just upstream of a particulate filter to catch and remove a substantial amount of the precipitate that is formed. One drawback to the lanthanum approach is that much of the precipitated material may escape capture and simply settle out in the system somewhere. That may not be an issue, but many aquarists do not prefer to accumulate such material. A second concern is that some people have observed problematic reactions from aquarium inhabitants. While there are not a lot of such stories, it is enough for many aquarists to look for other options.
However, due to its low cost, this approach is especially well suited to outside of the tank operations, such as the removal of excess phosphate from phosphate-contaminated calcium carbonate rock that is later to be added to a reef aquarium.
Soluble iron has also been used in this way, but not nearly so often as lanthanum.

Thank you for thatpH within the range attained in a reef tank, has a small impact on the amount bound. I don't think one could say that swings make it more likely for more to be released than to say it causes more to bind.

The easiest way to do this in my opinion would be to get a clean 5 gallon bucket or container. Fill with clean saltwater. Test this water for a baseline on your Po4. After finding what your clean water has, place some of your rock in the container(something for flow would be helpful). Let rock soak in container for 24 hours or so and test the water in the container if you have elevated levels it maybe due to rocks, but the problem with this is if any left over food or other contaminate go into the container with the rock this can also elevate the Po4 levels. From what I understand its fairly uncommon/rare for the rock to be the actual cause, and moving your tank and aquascape around will cause more stress to your tank than the elevated Po4 will.How do you know if your rocks are leaching po4
This link may help some. Remember O No3 can be an issue, as Dino's can arise as well as Hair algae. For me after using NOPOX and reaching O No3 and .12 PO4 I had Dino's,Cyno and alittle hair algae. My goal is 2-5ppm NO3 and .08-.12ppm NO3. I dose NO3 now at .8ppm every other day. It truley is a balancing act. While I get there, I also lose it and the game continues. Grrrrrr Remember the redfield is a general guide only as every tank is different. Just checked Nitrates & Phosphates with Red Sea test kit AND API and the Nitrates read nill on both tests and the Phosphates read .005 on Red Sea and 0 on API. That stated I still have an algae issues (mostly green hair) and wonder if I should dose with the NoPox or not bother? Please advise. Thanks!
