Poll: TOTAL MONEY SPENT on Reefing

So I was working on my budget and it blew me away as to how much money I spent in my first year of this hobby. I was curious as to whether this was normal or if I could gather some data to back myself up to my fiance and friends to justify this LOL

Just to get the conversation started, I spent around $12,000 Canadian, which I think is about $9,000 USD.

In the last 1.5 years my fiancé and I guessed close to 5000 ( Canadian ) lol

since I’ve first started in early 90’s

I don’t even want to think about it

Just made the total sum of the year yesterday...
7483$ (can), what gave some help this year was the selling of frags and some colonies, 7000$.
So basically this year the reef was inexpensive for me

Glad to see the first couple of people responding are fellow Canadians! Ah wow that sounds quite good. Do you have a frag tank to do this or do you just take stuff off your main display?

The cost is one reason why I'm interested in making a frag tank at some point when I get my 115 gallon set up later this month. Maybe make some money back/partly pay for stuff.

The total number was 10 colonies and 143 frags sold for 2020.

I've saved every receipt for my 60 gallon cube and its over 10k, it doesn't look like it for sure. I started saving receipts for my 180 and I said nope, im not doing this again

Doing the math. Its been roughly 9000$ in 2 years. But equipment wise its only like 700$. This is a 135g 6 foot tank. Most of money is livestock like corals fish.. and thr other expenses are food.. dosing stuff,salt ect.. that all adds uo

I never keep track of how much I've spent on my tank, and quite honestly I don't want to know. I diy just about everything that I can so mine is fairly low compared to most but I'd still guess it to be around $3,000 or so.

About the same.
Yearly maintenance is about $3k.

Over the last 2 decades plus, probably somewhere around $30,000. I lost track... $10,000+ seems like an inadequate description.

So what I’m hearing is you should move to the US to pay less and save a few dollars!

Also, I’ve been in reefing for 17+ years and would gladly say total amount I’ve spent over the years is roughly $30,000.....

Over the last 20 some years it's easily $50k-$75k or more.
