Poll: TOTAL MONEY SPENT on Reefing

Of the top of my head I’m around $2900 in just new lights in 2020 alone. I’m well over 10k. Probably 20k or so over the past 20+ years.

Over the last 20 some years it's easily $50k-$75k or more.

And I've got another couple grand in shopping carts with MD/BRS/Hamilton. More lights, more pumps, more testing stuff, more gadgets.

It's an addiction I can't kick! Or maybe I don't want to kick it...

The OP's survey needed a 10K-20K and 30k-40k then 50k and up .

I heard that there was an article done a couple of years ago that contained a survey from Reef Tank owners. They evidently found that the average amount of money spent was just over $13,000.

This hobby can quickly turn you into an equipment junky. I have been through phases of spending way too much money on stuff and then end up regretting it.

Drop in a bucket compared to some other tanks

I only save and buy the best I can or nothing at all

also just think of people dropping 500 on an sps frag, god only knows what stocking the tank cost

2 decades all of it with a 90 gallon, I'd guess around 20-25K Canadian. The early years I was a dummy...well really just a padawan learner. I am much more frugal now, yet still spend big if I see something truthfully worthwhile.
Wouldn't ask for any of that $$$ back though, it's a part of the journey.

Well this is a loaded question lol. My wife asked me once and I told her she’s on a need to know basis and she doesn’t need to know. Didn’t go over real well to say the least. The thing is, I tend to have expensive hobbies and I really enjoy reefing. I could be buying cars, cattle, razor ATV’s, etc but this keeps me involved and out of trouble plus my family and staff enjoy it. I wouldn’t have it any other way and I’m happy with where I’m at in this chapter of my life.

Just on my current build I want to say under $10k. But that could be pure denial. So I voted 5-10. Obviously if we were counting previous builds it would be much higher. Even my 3gal freshwater shrimp tank is almost $1k.

Wow, I should've expanded the options for the poll beyond $10K.

I also wish in the same poll we could see the correlation between how long people have been reefing and see what the curve looks like. I feel like at the start there is a lot of money spent, but as time goes on maybe the amount you spend every year tapers off...

I agree, initial upfront/build costs are usually the biggies. One thing not mentioned or addressed (going to spin this thread further) Yearly costs - fish/coral food, dosing additives, electricity, household water costs, maintenance goods - reagents, kalk etc...

I'll stick to my original thought(s) - I'd rather enjoy the hobby (affordably) but not evaluate every penny invested.

My 660g alone has at least $23,000 stuck into it. I have two other tanks. . . shall I go further. . LOL ?
