Which one do you prefer and why? I'm trying to decide between them both. I have a Red Sea Reefer 250...

I prefer ecotech personally i had the gyre and the propeller would crack from a snail it ecotech customer service is top notch as well with that tank I would prefer the clean look of no cords

Gyre pushes more water but the Vortechs are more controllable and look sleeker. I sold my 2 MP40's and battery backup and bought 1 Gyre 150 and it moves more water than my 2 mp40s did. I do miss the modes but I can honestly say I love my Gyre and have had no issues with it.

I have two on a planet aquarium 36inch crystline is almost the same dimensions as the redsea 250

I had Vortechs and Tunze Streams, I now have just two gyres on the tank. I think they look much less intrusive than the vortech, The gyre sits so high on the waterline you hardly notice them. They also move so much more water than I was able to do with my vortechs. With the icecap module I can pretty much do whatever I want for controllability. But in all honesty I mostly leave it in gyre mode alternating back and forth every 6 minutes. no dead spots anyplace and crazy water flow. I have had mine for about 1 year, and I have not had any problems with them at all.

Keep one on and go with the gyre is deff more then enuff for your tank, my tanks 5 foot and i run my 150 at 40% in alternate gyre mode

Whats also crazy about the gyre is it can stir up and push water down a 8 foot tank, but the flow is so gentle to the touch if you put your hand infront of it, u barely feel the push

How does your ecotech's have no cords. I've had the MP10s for awhile before switching to the Gyre and both had cords. One was on the outside one was on the inside. Either way I had to look at them.

Rboutin111, in my guote i said personal preference i had the gyre and i personally didn't like it some people love it but the one i had had a lot of issues with it i got it when it first came out

I added an anonymous poll.

Vortech's are well know so I'm not going to detail on those. Here is some info on the Gyre from my personal experience:
  • The Gyre is more quite than any vortech (assuming you have the most recent magnet mount/bracket). It can go on pulse mode and be dead silent.
  • It's an absolutely pain to reassemble, lots of tiny pieces that need to be hooked back up together perfectly. I've cleaned and reassembled mine numerous times successfully but it can be a real challenge.
  • Surprisingly, does not need frequent cleaning when run on low speed or pulse.
  • I don't have a way to get it back online immediately during cleaning, unlike a vortech where I have a spare wetside that can be swapped in only a few seconds.
  • In a 4' aquarium I cant turn the standard model up beyond a 50% pulse. I would like to run it higher but the gyre flow would literally skin the corals that sit on the bottom of the aquarium. I've actually opted to move the gyre down from the top to lessen the gyre effect and have more chaotic water movement. My tunze steams mix with the gyre flow and create excellent chaotic water movement.

+1...completely agree with this. I've got the 150 on a 6ft tank. Running it higher than 60% and I end up with bare bottom at the other end of the tank...it pushes the sand (special grade) back towards the gyre end.
