POLL: VorTech vs. Gyre! Which one do you prefer.

I love my gyre. Definitely an awesome pump. Moves water everywhere in the tank.

I dont like their controller too much though. Not enough options. But it can be used with the apex.

I have an Mp 60 Vortech and two gyre 150's in my 8ft X3ft X 3 ft peninsula tank. I like both pumps but voted for Gyre because in my particular application the dry side magnets are flat and only protrude half an inch. Vortech (with motor) protrudes 4 inches and are heavy can fall off easier if bumped into.. Water flow is definitely greater on Gyre too. All 3 pumps running about a year and no problems. Vortech probably has less heat since motor is on dry side. It also seems heavier and seems built and engineered better so it might last more years but too early to tell.
Cleaning takes longer on Gyre I guess but I haven't cleaned either yet. Yeah I know, inexcusable. Lastly, one mp60 costs the same as two Gyre 150's

Seems like mostly everyone that owns the Gyre loves the even flow it produces and are happy with it BUT it also seems that the quality is less than the VorTech and people are having more problems with the Gyre loosing it's power over time and some people have experienced broken Gyres. Then you have the VorTech which, from what I read, is more durable with higher quality and very powerful (even though the flow is not as even flow as the Gyre).

Overall, considering the fact that EcoTech VorTechs are more high tech than the Gyre and allows you to customize the flow wirelessly using ReefLink, and since I'm already running 2 Radions XR15 and 1 Vectra M1 I have decided that I will be going with 2 VorTechs MP10s. I think this will keep my setup more simple and will have the ability to sync the flow with the lighting.

Gyre for me. Higher flow and lower profile. I placed it in the middle of the tank in front of my internal overflow and it is easily creating water movement at the bottom of my 3f tall by 4ft long and 3ft deep tank. Incredible.

Love vortechs. Own them. But what I love the most is Tunze wavebox! Nothing can compare to total back and forth motion......

I have a 4x2x2 120g with a Vortech MP40QD on the left and an XF-150 on the right towards the top.

The gyre can't be turned up past 50% without risking annihilation of the softies near the sand bed. It does however do more than enough for the SPS near the surface.

Gyre moves more water, but creates more laminar flow.

Vortech can create better turbulence and work in tandem if you have two.

I am planning to sell the xf150 to replace with a Vortech. That way I can run them on the same program for added benefits/flow patterns.

I was in the market a couple of months ago and decided to go with the MP 40QD. So far I'm very happy. I've never had a Gyre but based on reviews I chose the MP40.

After seeing the quality (or lack of) with a friends Gyre, I've decided to stick with my Vortechs on my 240g. If Maxspect catches up on durability (feels cheaply made and friend has had to replace parts several times over just one year!) and adds a night mode (I don't use any other controllers) I might consider the Gyre when/if the Vortechs cramp out ... but they have been running flawlessly for 5+ years with just routine cleanings

I bought a gyre 150 upon initial release and love it, as it creates ridiculous flow in my 126g tank. However, I've always had an issue with creating interesting and visually appealing rockscapes while trying not to block flow. This has always been very difficult. Thus, I do have spots in my tank with extremely low flow. After reworking my rockscapes several times, I've just come to the conclusion that I need to supplement the gyre with additional flow and will probably do so by adding 2 MP40QDs to alleviate the dead zones. I love the idea of having such controllability with the vortechs (I've never owned one) and not having the power cord in the tank is ideal. I think both have advantages and disadvantages, so having both is the perfect solution! (albeit a very expensive solution, lol)

When I started to get serious with my tank, I put in Tunze. They moved a lot, were reliable and had great service. I jumped on the vortec bandwagon and had issues with every single one I owned. When they first came out, the public was their beta testers they went through re-design after re-design on the wetsides etc. At first they replaced for free.... then they started charging. I had them sliding down the glass after a period of time and eventually said enough is enough and went gyre. I have been happy with them ever since. I don't care to control them via apex, they are set and forget. Clean them as part of normal maintenance and they take care of you. They push a ton....

I will never buy another ecotech product due to my experiences with the MP40 and 60s, not to mention how they operate their business. They are slick products, fancy and appealing look wise but I refuse to support a company that does not stand by its products when they fail and continue to put out products they know have issues and charge you to fix them.

I have all 3 I think they all have there pros and cons ... The gyre is really fragile as far as assembly have to be careful when cleaning and put it back together exactly the right way .... Other then that I like the gyre because it can sit high on water line like someone else said and kinda hidden not much of an eyesore

I have the gyre 150. When a piece broke, CoralVue sent me replacement parts with no problem. I can't speak to the Vortech power heads but I do run the Ecotech L1 return pump. My system is 500 gallons with a 265 display and a 240 sump. The Vortech power heads would be a nice addition but I would need the mp60 which is way out of my price range.

I haven't used the Gyre, but the fact that I can shutdown my powerheads, pull the wetside out and rinse it off with my sink sprayer and put it back in the tank with ease, thats priceless to me!

Just read that the max tank thickness for a mp10 is 9mm and the reefer 250 is 12mm think...[emoji19]
