Anyone have any experience with these products and Ich management? Im getting a PBT and want something that can be used in the reef as a preventative since I know they are ich magnets. I know I have some ich in the tank from a puffer who brought it in. Blue hippo was scratching so I usually treat with sea chem metroplaex and focus which works really well for my fish as well as having 3 cleaner wrasse in the tank. I also run UV. No fish have any symptoms at the moment but I just want a preventative option as I cant go fallow, my QT tank isnt big enough for all fish and I dont have the money to set a QT big enough for fallow

Also should add no fish have symptoms of ich in the last month outside of the regal angel who is in QT and doing great! Puffer passed a month ago.

I'm in the process now of treating with Peroxide salt. I've purchased Reef rally pro on Amazon which doesn't arrive until mid Aug so day 3 on Peroxide and the purple tangs spots are clear just awaiting to see if they re infect. After this treatment of 22 days I will run a course of Reef rally if needed.

What did you end up doing? Which course did you take and any luck?

Reef rally doesn't help with ich. Peroxide can, but won't eliminate it.

And chances are, the powder blue will end up getting it, being the magnets they are.

I am just confused on why you aren't treating the whole stock when it seems like you have the capability to, and keep the tank fallow for 6 weeks?

i ended up doing nothing as none of my fish came down with anything and then I had the electrical issue that killed them all

Lost all my fish to an electrical issue, PBT is in QT still

I've used Medic to successfully treat velvet, but I also used it in conjunction with a UV.
I'm shocked that someone else had the same experience I did! (I didn't use UV, however.) I had a clear case of velvet and I am very aware of how quickly it progresses so since I didn't really have much of a choice then...years back... I just took a chance and dosed Medic which is a peroxide salt product as mentioned earlier and it truly did save both fish's lives I believe. Of course what really saved them was gaining a sort of immunity from feeding extra healthy foods when the Medic gave them a much needed opportunity to recover a little and no, I really don't think it was eradicated by any means until I was able to treat them and fallow the tank meanwhile (it's truly surprising to me that Medic gave them the "breather" they needed to partially recover enough to gain back appetite and strength until I was able to treat them.) That's a wicked parasite that will kill in 24 hours so Medic isn't the worst choice out there as some say. I only regard it as a temporary solution but very handy.

I've used Reef Rally Pro with Kick-Ich with no luck. The instructions says to turn off UV and I believe that was the worst thing I've done. Two fish died during the Kick-Ich treatment. Since then, I started using HumbleFish's method of hydrogen peroxide dosing with good results. My Purple tang has no spots now and two other fishes spot counts are slowly disappearing. Currently on week 3 and no fish deaths. I also have snails and invertebrates and they are doing fine as well. I've heard good things about Poly-Medic which I believe is hydrogen peroxide salts.

I think the point here is that if ich is present in your tank and you haven’t gone fallow and treated all fish simultaneously, it’s still in there, the untreated fish in the tank will always be carriers on some level. So as much as you’re QT’ing your PBT, it will inevitably get ich when you introduce it.

If the plan is to permanently manage and control ich in the tank, this is a valid approach, however, the products you’re asking about aren’t methods of long-term management, just short-term treatment. With them, ich will always return.

Now, I have successfully controlled ich and velvet with a combo of H2O2 dosing, UV and high quality food and water management, but these are measures as permanent and consistent as dosing trace elements, I won’t ever be able to stop them.

In all honesty, I think liquid hydrogen peroxide (3% of course) is far more effective in killing the parasites but this my personal experience and I wouldnt dose it unless I didn't have any better choices if you are talking about dosing directly to the DT. Medic touts it's "invert safe" and used in the correct dose I'd agree. However, this is because it's weaker and therefore less likely to cause damage.

Yeah I mean ich is kinda in every tank at some point in my opinion. Least of my worries now after the huge fish loss I had with the electrical issue if Lm being honest. I always run a UV too.

I’ve avoided medic specifically because they haven’t listed what’s in it (assuming H2O2, but what else?) AND quantified the concentrations.

One our best weapons in selecting strategies to combat ich/velvet/etc is full knowledge of what we’re using so we can at least make educated decisions on the whats, whens and how much to use.

Yeah, I can definitely see your point of view and concern with using it. Like I said, at the time I didn't have much of a choice though and needed to buy any time I could because it can kill so quickly. I really don't like using peroxide or Medic unless I feel it's really necessary.

Yep, this is one reason why I don’t maintain a QT system outside of initial health eval/improvement prior to introducing a new fish. As much as you take measures to eradicate when going fallow, chances of re-introducing ich again are much greater than 0% and we see it over and over again in this hobby.

Did you figure out your stray voltage situation?

I believe so, theres a broke surge protector in the breaker I guess. Work order has been put in. I switched to the top outlet for all the equipment and no issues at all. Lower outlet is screwed! No power to it at all, several other outlets have this same issue and those are in the work order to replace

Medic work well for me, I did lost couple fish but everything else recovered within 3 months, this is with the skimmer off and no UV. I still have no clue if my tank had ich, velvet or brook. I made a thread about it a while back.

I recently went the Polyplabs Medic (plus Ruby Reef Rally Pro) route and while it helped the symptomatic fish (Purple and Gem tangs) it was not without consequences. All of my LPS and Mushrooms are in bad shape and I am losing 90% of the acans that I have. I also lost a Mandarin and 3 Lyretail anthias that had been healthy in the tank prior to treatment. YMMV.

Velvet is very nasty. I lost a third of my fish in <24 hours, another third had contracted varying degrees of illness and the other third appeared asymptomatic. In Canada fish medications are practically non-existent, so it's really Medic, a UV and a Hail Mary...

I was very lucky not to have a breakout in a large, fully stocked tank. This was a nano with only 2 or 3 fish and I honestly don't know how it found its way in since I hadn't introduced any new fish for a while when the breakout occured. The only thing I could imagine is I just happened to be that 1 in a million who happened to introduce an invert and the parasites were in the bag water...terrible experience I'd prefer not to repeat.

NOTE: I don't pour all the bag water in my tank but some obviously could have made it in...
