Yes 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons. Since it sounds like an injury I would think it should begin to look better in less than a week. Fresh water baths do not cause any ill effects that I am aware of. If the other eye starts swelling it is something other than an injury most likely.

I dosed the Epsom Salt last night. He looks 10x better already. Thanks guys!

The slight cloudiness and it affecting only one eye (I presume the other eye is totally normal?) points to an injury. Neobenedenia flukes can cause cloudy eyes, but usually both are involved. Same with supersaturation - that would affect both eyes about equally.

I came home from work for lunch to take my puppy to the bathroom, and I noticed my Tang has what appears to be pop eye? Just want to get your opinions. Maybe he ran in to something? I haven't noticed any fish being aggressive to him.

IMO if the Pop eye in both eyes then it can be related to poor water quality or a bacterial infection that lead to the building up of fluids under the eye. If it's on only one eye then it's a trauma from an injury.

hi Jay! Glad to have another expert on board. Do you recommend any specific treatment other than the Epsom salt at this time? And could you advise on how much water should be changed if a second does of Epsom salt is needed and when?

Hi, I actually don't use epsom salts in marine aquariums - its use is primarily as a tonic/dip for freshwater fish. Seawater formulas already contain between 7 and 19 grams of magnesium sulfate per gallon (depending on the recipe). NSW magnesium level is around 1200 ppm and sulfur is around 840 ppm. Some benefit might be seen using it as a dip in additional concentrations, but I wouldn't add it to an aquarium as a long term bath.

I was shocked myself. I used the Epsom and his eye is 100x better, appears to be healing.

Jay Hemdal is our newest expert and comes to us with high recommendations. And because of his experience and accreditation I will consider what he says with an open mind. And while science plays a huge part in this hobby so does a dose of magic and experimenting. And sometimes something works and there is no way I can explain it. In this case it just does work! And has many other times. Right now I have a butterfly fish named Pumba in my tank. I have had him for 2 years. He appears to have ich most of the time. No other fish appear to in any of my other tanks or in his. There is a tang in the tank with him. They are magnets I hear. But nothing. The tang is a white tailed bristle tooth. There are also 2 regal angels. Nothing on them either. Nothing wet added to the tank either. No explanation. But I am unwilling to take them all out, around 50-60 fish, mostly small, to quarantine and treat at this time. I plan on upgrading sometime and will use CP at that time.

Everyone was spot on with epsom salt. One other thing to watch out for may be flukes. A fresh water dip in a dark bucket if he does not get better may be needed.

Got a banggai cardinal with what appears to be pop eye. Could you please clarify on how to dose the epsom salt? So i could mix it directly in my tank or does this have to be done in a hospital tank? TIA

He is still eating well at least feeding a lot of selcon, water quality is 50/0.1

I am picking up erthromycin tomorrow and hoping I can catch him to put in qt tank, might be tricky though .

Anything else? I was hoping it would clear on own but it’s getting worse.

The only time it is "contagious" is when it is caused by gas supersaturation due to an equipment malfunction, and that looks a bit different - you can see silver bubbles in the eyes and sometimes the fins.

I managed to get the fish out in qt tank, I am on round 3 of erythromycin, how many treatments should I do? When should I expect to see improvement? Fish is still alive but not eating as far as I can tell, eyes not looking good.

Most antibiotics take 5 to 7 days to work, and then the eyes will take another period of time to repair (like 2 weeks perhaps?). The fish not feeding now isn't a good sign of course. Fingers crossed!

Round 5 of EM. Fish is clearly blinded , it’s aware food is around and is trying to eat but can’t see:/ still swollen eyes, possible recovery?
