Poseidon's NEW Adventure! ;)

Go a little bluer, algae is not a big fan of too much blue!

Thanks Logan, I may try that. I really haven't ever had a "blue" tank though.

LMK if you want another chromis. I have one that you are welcome to for free. It does not fit my new tank well.

LOL! Thanks, not a huge deal really. I like them, and they are pretty fish, but it seems to be MY norm to end up with one or 2. Others have had schools of 5-6 for years, but never me.

Mike,
Do not be fooled by the dim look!!!
It's the darn LEDs! They are direct beams vs. a saturated light like T5s (verbage may be off)

Ya, I know David. I am not blaming the light, more my lack of expertise with it. I also know a PAR meter isn't perfect in measuring LED light. The corals that I got from you at the swap are all doing GREAT, and they came from LED. ;) The other corals in my tank came from a GORGEOUS T5 lit tank, and they are not so happy. (Well the trumpet, and frogspawn are doing just fine.)

Maybe I'll just raid your tank for ALL my corals, LOL! I could grow an AWESOME reef that way. :D :D :D

My experience as well with Chromis. If you're interested in taking the one I have, PM me and we can work out details.

Oh...you're right.....David has some awesome corals! Picked up a few pieces from him at the swap and all are doing well. I'm very happy with his stock.

Another documentation type post....

Turned the whites down about 1/8 of a turn on the "knob" last night to see if there an effect on the algae growth rate.

I am thinking about a "red thorny" star for a new addition to the tank, what are your experiences with them? Live aquaria claims they are only reef safe while small, others say they are always reef safe... Typical answer in the hobby I know.

No clue about the star but it sure would make a fantastic photography subject! LOL!

LOL! Thanks Rev, I agree! Maybe I'll swing by the "local spot" and see if they still have any in stock. My son has a 3 team scrimmage tomorrow, first year in football!

Reef related, in that my reef is in the picture! ;)

This is me and my soon to be 12 year old German Shepard, Centauri. Centauri has bad hips, they are getting the best of her lately, she has trouble getting up and down stairs, and can no longer jump on the bed, or into my Jeep. There are days that she wants to PLAY, just like when she was younger, there are others that she wanders around the house huffing and puffing, panting, because she can't find a comfortable spot to sit or lay down. I know that my days with her are numbered, so I wanted to share a quick image of her here. (She is notoriously camera shy, and runs and hides when she sees the camera out.)

Thank you for allowing me to share the BEST Dog I have ever owned!!!!

What a great looking dog! and so is your reef tank. We had a German Shepard "Claude" best dog we ever had, he also had the hip problem. we now have an Australian Shepard "Stella" she is non-stop energy.

been slacking on updates...how is that algae outbreak coming?

Hey Mike, I just noticed the red knobby star post... I don't have the knobby, but I have an orangish red linkia and its pretty cool + stands out but doesn't take away from the rest of the tank either.... and is safe as far as I can tell.

It has been a while... The Algae is under just about gone. :) I have a clean up crew that consists of mostly Mexican Turbo snails, and that Red Thorny Star now. They have been doing a great job on the Algae for sure.

Thanks Chris, so far I have not noticed him near any of the few corals in the tank, which is a good thing.

These past 7 days have been a real trip for me, and the tank. Last Saturday I made the difficult decision to have Centauri (pictured above) put down, her hips and bladder were failing her, and I couldn't stand to see her in pain. A few hours after getting back from the vet I found a local breeder of German Shepherds about 2 hours drive away from me, with 2 female and 2 male pups up for adoption. Well, we came home with a new PUPPY! Sasha is now 11 weeks old, and is doing very well with her potty training. :) Emotional roller coaster to say the least... Probably the hardest thing I have ever done was putting Tauri down.

Sunday morning last week we were playing with Sasha, and looking forward to having a couple days to spend with the kids and the new puppy. About 10:30 Stacey (my wife) gets a call from who she thinks is her Dad... It wasn't. It was Sgt. Ferris from the Byron County GA police department. Stacey's Dad had been in an accident, he is a Semi Truck driver, so we were anticipating the worst. Stacey handed the phone to me, as she was in tears speaking to the Sgt. Turns out Gary had no pulse, and was not breathing at the scene, as luck would have it, a Flight Nurse witnessed the accident, and pulled Gary from the big rig and started CPR. According to the police report, EMS arrived on scene 4 minutes after the 911 call went out. The EMS had to shock Gary TWICE to establish a good pulse, they took him to the closest medical facility, which was in Peach County, a small facility according to the nurse we spoke too.

After a couple of CT scans, and being placed on a ventilator, they transferred him to Medical Center of Central Georgia. We waited for a few hours to hear from MCCG, after the transfer, and the news was not good. Gary was in a Semi-Comatose state. We packed a bag, called my sister to take care of our 2 kids and new puppy, and started or GA on Sunday night, about 9 pm. I drove until 1:30 am, and we stopped at a rest area for a 3 hour nap, then hit the road again. We arrived at MCCG at 2 pm on Monday, where Gary was in CCU (Critical Care Unit) and was "not responsive". They had done an MRI, and were waiting for the results when we got there. Seeing my Father in Law in the state he was in, was not easy, the vent, the food tube, and all the probes and IV's, it was a sight I won't forget.

Tuesday the MRI results came in from the MRI as "normal", which was encouraging, but Gary was still not responsive. On Wednesday, we saw a Neurologist. This Doctor was AWESOME! He explained the results were "normal" for a 90 year old man, not for a 63 year old one. Gary was an Alcoholic, it was who he was, was never going to change. The results of his drinking were the atrophy of his brain, and a weakened capacity for healing. The neurologist did many tests, but at the end, the news was poor, Gary was in a vegetative state, and had no central nervous system function at all. Doc said there was a less then 1% chance Gary would ever wake up, that he could remain on life support in this state forever.

My wife talked it over with her family and it was a unanimous decision that Gary would not WANT to exist in this state, as it was not LIFE. Gary's brother and sister made it to MCCG about 5:30PM Friday, after a time a Priest was called, and Gary was given the last rites, and at 8PM his life support was removed. Gary was moved to a pallative care unit about 9:30PM. As of a few hours ago, he was still there, breathing on his own, his body fighting to live, even though there is no brain activity other then the basic signals to tell the heart to beat, and lungs to breathe.

We are now planning a funeral... to say that we have had a tough week, is a bit of an understatement. I do appreciate the support of all my friends and "reef family" trough this difficult time, AND bearing with me as I typed out a short novel here, to vent.

There was some fish tank drama in the middle of the week, I will get all caught up with that in the next post though.

Ok, now that you know the why I was away...

On Wednesday night my sister sent me a text with a picture of the tank and the water level was LOW, like when the return pump is off. The GFCI that the sump is plugged into was tripped. I had Mandy unplug the heater, and the skimmer, and then plug the controller back in, POP. Off goes the GFCI again. DRAT! At that point I knew it was the return pump. I asked my sister to take a heater upstairs and put it in the tank, and had her turn the vortec down to the minimum.

I called my good friend James, and asked if he could swing by my place to see if he could get the return pump going, as I knew I would not be back until Saturday. I was planning a water change, so I had fresh mixed Reef Crystals in my mix bucket. When James got here, he drained the sump low enough to remove the return pump. When he took it off, and opened it up, he said it looked "10 years old" inside, and was seized up. James cleaned it up, and the pump started running again! PHEW!!!! On Monday I will be calling Reeflo and/or PA, and will see what they have to say about my 3 month old pump having RUST inside it.

The pump is running as of now, but I am sure that the extra iron added to my algae outbreak, and probably isn't the best thing in the world for my corals. I am not real worried about getting a replacement, as both companies, (Reeflo, and store Premium Aquatics) have excellent reputations, so I am sure a solution will be had come Monday.

Wow, man. It sounds like you've been through a lot to put it mildly. Best wishes to your family.

Glad to hear your friends are able to help take care of the little things.

Best wishes to you and the family for the losses, that certainly had to be a strenuous week.

Are you referring to a Protoreaster linckii? Saltwater Invertebrates for Marine Reef Aquariums: Red Knob Sea Star

We used to have those at the Trop all the time and they are not "reef safe".

Really sorry to hear about Centauri and your father in law Mike. Your family will be in my prayers. Best wishes with the new puppy and getting things back on track with the tank.

Sorry about the pump mishap bro. Hope you get it situated.

Thanks Marv, I am sure it will be an easy fix.

Thanks! I was glad to have James available as well, he came right over for me and my piece of mind.

Oh man, I knew things were bad but not as bad as they are, my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I appreciate the well wishes. Trying to get calmed down and back on track now.

Thanks Austin, the star is a Echinaster echinophorus I have read both reef safe, and NOT reef safe... so far so good, I'll keep my eye on him though.

Sorry to hear about all the troubles troubles in the family. Congrats on the new puppy!

Thanks! That tank looks really good now, cleaned the glass, and put a clean filter sock in. I may just break out the camera tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about all the troubles in the family. Congrats on the new puppy!

Thanks! Sasha is a RIOT! She is very smart, doing VERY well with potty training, and is full of puppy cuddles. She has a favorite toy, and is proceeding to chew it to pieces! Better the squeaky squirrel then my SHOES!
