Possible sick anemone

Are you running carbon at the moment? Leathers are known to release toxins when stressed, and a tank move is pretty stressful, it’s quite possible they could be irritating the anemone.

Optimum parameters would be around:
Dkh 8 to 8.5
Ca 400
Mg 1400
Salinity 1.026
Nitrate 5 to 10 ppm
Phosphate 0.07 to 0.13
Ph 8 to 8.35
Thank you.

I am not running carbon, I’m new to this stuff, how do I get carbon? Or do you have any recommendations?

The tank has been settled for about a week and a half now. Would I still need to worry about the toxins?

Yes wave makers. If you adjusted the flow to make them stronger or moved them around. This will also affect the nem.

As for parameters. Its debatable among reefers. Each tank finds equilibrium.

I own 3 nems. I can only tell you that mine prefer
Nitrates: 5-10ppm but can go as high as 20.
Phos: 0.03 to 0.15
alk: stable at 8
PH: 7.8-8.2
Salinity: 1.025-1.026
Calcium: 400-460
Magnesium: 1400-1500
temp: 78F
My test will come in next Tuesday. I have no store around me that sells stuff for aquariums at all so I have to order it sadly….

My wave makers do you have any recommendations for the settings? I’ll attach a picture of the controls. Tank is 100gal.

No problem!

If you have a Local fish store, they should have some. If not, you can get it from any of the major online stores( Bulk reef supply, saltwateraquaroum.com etc.) I currently use chemi pure blue, and seachem matrix carbon on my tanks. Chemi pure elite would also work.

It definitely would not hurt to run some carbon, toxins may be broken down by now, but also still could be there. I’m not well read on the decomposition of stuff like that. Either way it won’t hurt your tank to run some.

It would be hard for me to recommend what to choose for settings. Its basically trial and error. By changing the flow for the nem. You could also disrupt your other corals. I just wanted to verify if you changed the flow pattern from the original setup.

I wouldn't make any sudden changes until you get new test kits to verify parameters. We don't want to make any drastic changes.

For all we know everything is stable and your nem is just grumpy from being moved after so many years.

The wave makers were changed, once they were unplugged it rest everything so I put them back to what I thought they were set to.

I ordered testing strips, but they don’t test for phosphate, I looked for it on testing strips but I could not find it but I could find the test separate. Do I need to get that as well? This is what I ordered.

Also could you help me identify some of the things in this picture that way I can get a hint of what’s in the tank.

I recommend getting the best you can obtain/afford.

Test strips are not the most accurate but if that's what you can get. Its better than nothing.

Personally I highly recommend
Hanna checkers for alk, nitrate and phos.

Salifert for mag/cal.

Is this a current picture? If so the mag looks fine!

I see you have green Palythoas…. Those also release toxins if disturbed.

See coral I’d below:

Yellow Arrow- Annoyed or shedding Toadstool leather corals
Blue Arrow- green toadstool
Red Arrow- Kenya tree leather
Orange Arrow- either Xenia or Anthelia
Purple Arrow- Green Palythoas

Thank you so much! And this picture is from before it was moved I wish, I really need to go in and move some things around, it’s all unorganized but it was so late the night we got it home. I was more worried about it all getting in the water and getting them the temp they needed. Right now it’s all in there it really just needs a good organizing done to it.

How do you suggest to use this? Would I need to put it in the sump tank? Also how much would I need to use, I read up it says 250 ml treats 100gallons so would I put 250ML in the sump? (seachem matrix carbon)

The anemone came with the tank… I was told it is 20 years old it has been in the tank for that long along with everything else. I’ve only fed it once, I am using a reverse osmosis filtration system that automatically fills the tank when low. The salinity is 1.24. I am using led lighting (blue). Nitrates (NO2) (NO3) are 0ppm along with the ammonia. Ph is 8.2. Is there anything I need to do to care for it because it looks nothing like it did before it got moved. I was told to feed it 1 shrimp a month by the old owners that had it since it was small.

Hey you mentioned that your RO is filling up the tank automatically tell us a little more about this. Does it have a DI on it, is it plumbed directly to the tank. There’s a couple of concerns that I think we can check in this regard. Main one being something called TDS creep.

Yes use the correct amount for your tank, if you are a little over or under that won’t hurt anything. Put the carbon in a media bag and place it in an area with decent flow in the sump. Do you have a picture of the sump?

The RO is ran to the sump. It’s how the tank was setup before I got it, everything was healthy as could be. What is a DI?

I don’t have a picture of it right now. But the tank is definitely custom….. I am looking at getting another one because this one is starting to fall apart. But I can tell you how is set up. It’s divided into 3 sections with rocks on the bottom. 1st section, the water flows in from the tank. 2nd (middle) has a filter laying in it. 3rd water gets sucked back up to the tank. It’s minimal unsure of how it actually cleans. Like I said it is definitely custom…. But this is how the guy ran it for all those years and it looked great but I really need to get a new sump. Any recommendations?

This sounds like the tank is way too advanced for where you are at.

Are you sure? I think they are the same species. Like they can touch each other.
You might be thinking of Stichodactyla Haddoni and Stichodactyla Gigantea?

Those two are in the same family, where as H. Magnifica is more closely related to H. Crispa (Sebae Anemone)

@Colesweat342 how is your nem doing?

I believe that is old information. Have a look.
