No, behavior is pretty universal amongst the genus.

Sounds like a spinal injury.
I figured it wasn't normal. I was just hoping it was something they did occasionally. Would a spinal injury be from another fish, parasite, or just bad collection? He seemed fine when I first got him, other then hiding from the very beginning.

Usually self inflected from crashing into the tank sides or top when spooked.
If that's the case, is there anything I can do? Therapy, chiropractor? Just kidding. I really hate to see him suffer if it is his spine.

Just keep him fed, some recover, some don't, it just depends on the severity.

So far he's still eating great. I'll take a closer look at him tonight while feeding. Thanks everyone for your input.

I watched the pintail closer as I was feeding. I did get a video of it, but couldn't get it loaded on here. He was hiding again, but as soon as the food hit the water he came out. He eats almost horizontal to the sand. He's not pinched behind the head. He does eat well, he's just not swimming. He seems to be using his front fins for thrust because he doesn't really move his tail. When he does turn, it seems like his spine takes on an odd shape. I guess the injured spine diagnosis was correct. Poor fella. I hate to see him suffer.
