Actually, if velvet tomonts were encysted to the coral introduced 2 days ago ... dinospores (free swimmers) could already be in the water looking for fish to infect.

It typically takes 48 - 96 hours for 200 dinospores to form inside each tomont and then rupture.

What kind of coral was it? Does it have a hard or stony base? Did you rinse or dip the coral before adding it?

Also, did you accidentally dump any of the bag water into the tank?
Sorry, the system never notified me of a reply. The corals added were two sps pieces and one lps. No dipping done as the lfs had already done so and I wasn't too sure about the extra stress. No store water. I drip acclimate and then place my coral by hand. I'm working on getting my qt up and running. I'm trying to find my stuff. It's been a while since I kept a reef tank.

If you can catch the Potter's, a 5 min FW dip would at least rule out/confirm the existence of flukes inside the gills: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/freshwater-dip.248898/

If no flukes show, I would consider velvet the more likely culprit. Especially if more fish start breathing heavy & show other symptoms of velvet: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/velvet-amyloodinium-ocellatum.217570/
Yes, I'm at a hospital with a family member right now, but as soon as I get home that was my plan. I thorughly read your article on Velvet, but I'm in a bind as far as Ruby Rally. Would just a copper treatment be sufficient? It's really all I've got.

I would do the FW dip first . Of course having the meds for velvet on hand is a great idea. If you couldn't get Rally (or Acryflavin) then a formalin dip would work and if you could get neither then the FW dip would be the third option. Since you are already doing a FW dip, then you'd have done step one unless you get Rally or Formalin (which can be found in Quick Cure).

I would at least do the FW dip before dosing copper in QT. I haven't had much success just treating with copper when it comes to velvet. :(

Potters are perhaps the most suceptible dwarf angel to ich and velvet. They typically die if it's present within 1-3 months with 3-5 weeks being average. If velvet it can be 2-3 weeks.

I've long adored potters at one point I kept a lucky trio of them. My prized giant potters died a few months ago (it was 5" long as assuredly very old I got it from a fellow hobbyst as he was coral nipping and I had a FOWLR for him). I enjoyed it for 2 more years. I haven't tried again which is weird as I've kept one for nearly the entire time I've been in the hobby (12 years) although because i wouldn't accept that I needed to qt mine lasted only a 6 months to a year at a time which is sad to reflect on what a hard head I was.

You mean present in the system? How do I go about eradicating it from my system that's full of inverts and coral?

If you're talking about ick, velvet, flukes ect. then you would leave the tank fallow (fishless) for 76 days to cover all of those. They will starve out and die leaving the tank parasite free.

Oh. Man... well, that will be interesting. My qt is only 5 gallon

Just play it by ear. If you end up needing a larger QT, then it might be a good idea to be looking at craigslist or facebook or even right here on R2R for a cheap 10 or 20 gallon tank for this purpose.

Looks to me your filefish has spots that look like ich. Your potter has some kind of parasites effecting his gills. Remove asap start treating with copper. I might give potter a freshwater bath. Make sure temp, and ph is same as DT. Set up at least 10 gal hospital tank.

Well, thanks everyone.. But he didn't make it. That fast. Gah. Sometimes this hobby.... You hate to love it or love to hate it. One of the two.

That's part of the file's body. They extend and retract based on mood.

Run your system fishless for 76 days. Treat the remaining fish with copper in a hospital tank.

I'm sorry you lost your fish. :(

Just make sure you keep a close eye on your other fish to see if they start showing unusual symptoms. It's probably worthwhile to make sure you have meds on hand as you have seen how quickly some of this stuff works.

Thanks buddy. It blows, but is what it is. I'm gonna yank everything with a fin out this weekend barring an emergency and treat everyone with copper, since the speed of mortality seems to indicate Velvet, then run fallow the DT. Better to choose this route than find myself walking down it by force when a E.L.E. hits the whole population. I am also in the process of building a pharmacy in the fish room, so that'll be good...

Ok, need a little more help from you experts... I'm trying to pull everything out of the DT but I can't catch it! I managed to trick a few chromis into a baited cup and the filefish was easy to nab, but I cannot for the life of me get the other 3 chromis, the fairy wrasse, or the assessor. Any brilliant suggestions? Pulling the rock is not an option. Too many corals.

Pulling the rock will honestly be the easiest/fastest thing to do. I've been there -had to pull all my rocks and corals out to get just one fish- and i wish I had done that from the getgo because I would have been done days earlier. You just need plenty of totes, drain the water from you DT into the totes and place all the rocks and corals into them. When you get the fish, put the rocks and corals back and refill. You can even use this chance to do a water change which never hurts.
