I tried everything I can think of except clams. Can anyone tell me how to feed that? Today was black worms and live brine shrimp. No interest. When I get within 3 feet of the QT (no meds in there yet) he freaks out and hides in the PVC. Won't come back out even for live food! It's been a week now.

I would put pods in there. Do you have a sump with Cheto?

Have you called the LFS that you got him from and asked what foods he was eating?

Pods and a rock with some micro algae will also help, they are grazers; I just pulled a flame angel out of my qt into the dt, I added small pieces of rock with algae into the qt for his grazing. Potters are usually a bit more difficult.

Another trick is to add a couple of dither fish. Like a couple of chromis, them swimming around and eating can make the more delicate angel feel safer.

For the clam, you can just serve it on the half shell (spoiled fish, right?)

You should freeze it first to kill any pathogens. I'm going to confess though, I have a regal that won't eat anything but fresh, never frozen, littlenecks. And flakes, surprisingly. I've been trying to train him on frozen foods for months now, but no luck.

I would try flake foods too. I've had luck with them with another picky angel as well.

Do I need to do anything else to it other than crack it open and put it in the tank?

Thanks for the reply. I have a clown and goby in there with him. I'm afraid to add a rock that isn't safe in there and I want to treat with copper at some point. Can I get pods frozen?

Got him from LA. Already tried all the foods they said he was eating. He's just so freaked out. Plus most of the food after an hour or so are filtered out. I turned off the filter for about a half hour he still hid the whole time.

When I get fish in that are really shy and dart for cover the moment they see me, while in the quarantine tank, I put up a few sheets of dark poster paper on one end and half the front glass to give the fish a little more cover so they don't feel so exposed.
Also when I put food in I put just a little in at a time and put it right in front of a powerhead so it moves.

Thanks I'll give that a try!

I have a back filter on my quarantine tank that has a open top. So when I use foods like frozen hykari mysis, I defrost it with a little water and then dump it in where the back filter drops into the tank and it goes directly in front of a powerhead and shoots across the tank. I do it from the end that is covered so the fish don't really see me. All they see is the food moving.
I try and peek to see if they are going after the food.

Do they ever get used to you? Never had one this scared before.

Potters are especially difficult, a grazing rock is the most effective I've found for difficult angels or tanks for that matter. Pull one with algae or even break a piece of one from your dt and add it. You can get pods from the fridge section at your lfs. Once he starts grazing he will then usually start feeding on other things. It's really about getting him started, you can always pull the rock out later.

As mentioned earlier having at least the back blackout as well, all sides opened can also be imtimidating. As far as them getting more social to you, each fish is different. The are a wonderful fish when they settle in

So the regal is getting fresh clams that bypass the freezing for pathogens step? I have a copperband that is only eating live blackworms. Doesn't touch the hikari frozen half shell clams. Also occasionally pecks things in sand and rock but not to a large degree

Yes, it won't touch the frozen ones. It's not ideal, but the fish needs to eat. I do give the clam a good rinse in RO after I open it and soak a few drops of vitachem on it and he doesn't mind that. The only other food he will take is a flake food, but nutritionally I think the clam is better.

I don't understand how a fish would starve itself to death. I still haven't seen my potters up close. I've never seen him eat but he's still alive somehow.

For finicky fish I feed and slowly back far away.

For potters, they do best quarantined with fish that eat eagerly as well. This is true for most finicky fish -- so long as they're not intimidating and too large/active as stress can cause issues.

Keep up the blackworms and live brine -- I find very small amounts of either are more enticing then a big glob to a finicky fish.

Once I'm within sight of the tank it disappears in the PVC and never comes out again. I've only seen it from about 20 feet away!! Clown is in there with him.

My angle was very shy at first. But I target feed everyone with a modified pipette. I would at first just put the pipette near the opening where he was hiding and squirt some food in mixed with garlic in. Now he attacks the tip of the pipette if I don't squirt the food out right away. All my fish feed from the pipette now. My maderin who is wild is the only one who dose not swim up to it. But also dose not flinch if I put it near him. Trying to get him on myisis but he's not having it. Loves oyster feast and roe.

Probably not helpful at this point, but I always put tricky eaters into my coral QT (which rather defeats the role, buy what the heck) which contains live rock and lots of hiding places. Got both my potters and lemonpeel to eat this way. Lemonpeel was the toughest - didn't eat frozen for 6 weeks, subsisting by grazing off the rocks.
