Power outage- how long before you should start to worry.

Well the covid thing doesn't really work in my area most of our management thinks its fake. But I dont really want to get into that right now.

GREAT NEWS! I got a message 30minutes ago saying that power should be restored. Logged onto my red sea app and my reef dose is communicating again then checked my inkbird and its up and running. Temp only dropped to 75' for the little over 3 hrs that power was out. Ive got low temp alarms going off but its slowly heating back up. I think I got lucky this time. Getting a battery backup to at least run my heater and airstone of needed for the next time around.
Awesome news that the power's back on!

Also, the bit about your management thinking it's fake...this is exactly why so many of my colleagues are quitting health care (I'm an ER nurse)...seriously hard to muster up compassion for patients like this anymore.

I feel you, I have friends working in hospitals all over the state and hear this regularly. In our area they had to have the local police keep a permanent presence in the hospital due to patients getting combative and accusing the staff of lying to them about them being positive for covid. Thank you @adittam for everything you do to help others! You deserve way more then you are probably getting for all you have had to do since this pandemic started.

I keep some emergency rescue /thermal foil blankets handy to wrap around tanks when we lose electricity in cold weather. Very cheap, almost weightless and, more importantly, work to maintain temperature and minimize evaporation.

Good luck.

Thank you for the kind words. I wasn't trying to fish for compliments, but I appreciate it.

Great news only 3 hours power outage and no real harm done it sounds like but enough to get you better prepared for next time if there is a next time.
I really need to get myself at least a few battery operated bubbles at minumum just incase happens to me

My reef tank is heavily stocked, so I call. SCE and if it's gonna be more that an hour I grab the generator that powers my whole tank plus the TV and wifi.

All good and everyone is still happy

I went 12 hrs last night running 1 return as low as possible off my work van...everything survived great. Tank dipped to 67 degrees

Well it finally got me. High winds in northern michigan just knocked out power at my home and I'm at work. The wife is nervous about getting our generator going because she's not familiar with it. Im already getting stressed out but I know I have some time.

My system is just under 60gallons total.

My 2 issues right now are temp and O2. Temp runs at 78 normally and I know it will take some time for that to really start plummeting. As far as O2 goes the tank is currently sitting with no flow going. So 0 gas exchange happening.

I'm curious as to how long I can get away with this. Power is hit or miss all around our region right now so I'm not holding high hopes that our electric provider will be on top of this right away. Just looking for opinions on when I should start to go into panic mode and possibly bail out of work to make sure I'm not going to loose everything. My shift at work won't end for another 8hrs and I won't be home for 9hrs if I decide to stay all day.
I literally just dealt with this with the Tornadoes in KY, specifically Bowling Green. I went without power to the tank for roughly 18 hours. 15 hours in & the fish were starting to show rough signs and the corals were retracted. Thankfully got it hooked up to a generator and everything was totally fine after that. Good thing because power to the house didn't come back for 40 more hours.

Everyone doesn't have that luxury.
I was thinking this reading this thread. I’ve definitely taken it for granted that I have a job where I could just tell my boss I have an emergency and have to go home and save my tank, be back in a couple hours. Won’t take that for granted ever again!

Leaving for small things is not an option for me usually. I have 4 large printing press machines that im responsible for keeping running. Being the only maintenance guy in our plant on day shift im a pretty essential guy to keep in the shop while things are running.

I am glad you power came back in a reasonable time. Over the last week I lost power and decided to allow things to run their course. Power was out 8 hours and nothing was lost in either tank. I will admit one tank has a Ecotech battery back up and I do plan to purchase one for the other.

It appears to me, having had this happen multiple times over the years I have had tanks up and running, that as long as temp drops slowly the inhabitants will be ok. Once with a power outage that was expected to last days I did purchase two marine batteries and an inverter to keep one of the power heads running.
