Hey guys I was wondering what power strip I should buy for my new set up. one with a timer would be prefered. thanks!

I can't afford a controller at the moment. It will come later

So I need to go power strip for now

I understand the benefits of a controller. Just can't afford what I want at the moment

That's the second time I've had those suggested to me. Where did you get it?

Alright got one! They don't have them at best buy but they did have at guitar center

Those dj ones are sweet I wish they had something like that with a timer

Plug in a timer and run a second strip off it. Or two or three timers. ..and strips.. LOL...

To know how many timers I have in my cave I'd have to go count them. The darn things are only $4 at Wallymart.

You can't afford $114 for a reef keeper light basic? It includes 4 fully programmable outlets and a temperature probe (can control your heater as well). When you are done with it, you could probably get most of what you paid for it.

I never understood the fascination with the DJ panels. It isn't a suge supressor so you get no protection there. And how often are you turning on and off your stuff (other then lights which should be on a timer)? I see no point to the DJ panels maybe someone can explain it to me.

I have return pump on1, skimmer on 2, reactors on 3, mp40's on 4, etc...the only thing I don't have on there is lights. All the other things I either turn off when feeding or water changes. Unless you want pumps to run dry when doing water changes this is an obvious. When the water gets low you have to turn off mp40's unless you want to blow bubbles. Agree with no surge protector but that's why my panel is plugged into a surge protected power strip so everything on DJ strip is protected. Agreed that the controllers are not that expensive BUT to contradict the need for a controller. If you have quality power heads that are already controlled, good ato that is already controlled, and good lighting that is controlled then the only thing I see a controller worth controlling would be a heater. Sooooooooooo what really is the point of a controller? Monitoring ph which is irrelevant if you're dosing kalk? Monitoring salinity (if you can't keep salinity in check there's no point in continuing in hobby as that's the easiest parameter to keep in check)? Monitor orp(most people including myself have no idea what this even is and how relevant is it. Apologize to anyone who clearly would know more about this and it's relevance)?

To conclude all the successful people that I know with GORGEOUS tanks

A. Have a DJ strip.
B. do not have a controller.

:)

Interesting, I do not have a DJ strip, I do not have a controller. I do have a 5 station dose system, but I built it (you can look up my step by step instructions on this forum), I do have a complex electrical system, it is DIY too. I have all my pumps on switches, my lights are on timers. I never need to monitor my salinity closely, the salt isn't going anywhere. I never need to monitor my pH closely, it is the least of my concerns. If you are having to monitor salinity and pH closely IMO you need to figure out why and correct the source of the problem. In my case a controller just doesn't bring anything to the table. Currently I do testing about once a month and then yawn from boredom. The temperature of my reef and my change water are controlled by professional grade units used through out the food and manufacturing industries and cost less than $35 each. They will control the fans, chiller, and heaters within .6° C.

As for a DJ strip, that is a cool device, but a hand full of $$ and a couple of hours later you can have a bank of 4 hole outlets controlled by bank of light switches, plugged into a GFCI...... If you are a DIY type. ;) I see this as a complete hobby, the more I can DIY the more the point of the hobby. .. and each time I build, use, or adjust a DIY project .. I just giggle louder.

The thing about doing things DIY is the more you do, .....the more skills, tools, and creative knowledge you build into your DIY tool box. It snow balls in a hurry!!! ALSO.. it is good for the brain.

AND it is a load of fun.

FYI the DJ strips are only like $30 if I recall. I am intrigued about the temp controller!!! Please share:)! I would def love to have 1 to control heater if they're that inexpensive (right now I just yell at wife to put heat or Ac on depending on circumstance. Lol I'm running LEDs so tank tends to be same temp as house.)
