very true on the spread... that is my one complaint. though with enough of them to get the needed coverage, i don't think there would be any issues using them as the only light source.

Agreed. This is why pretty much any LED lighting system consists of a bank of LED's, with multiples, in rows and rows.

Does anyone know about the first hand info about the Ice Cap LED Tube Arrays. how far deep the light would penetrate?

very cool - i'm also interested in seeing them. mainly to see if they've got optics, and if they are the 1-watt super bright leds.

That's great! I'm think to use them over my frag tanks. Powerbrite bar might be too strong and killing my frag since my light canopy is only 18" above my tank.

what makes you say that? the penetration is certainly there...
IMO on larger tanks you would need 3 watt LED's to get the par value needed to support corals . 1 watt LED's would have to low of a par rating on tanks with depth of 16 inches plus , just my 2 cents , but you could always check with Evil over at nano-reef.com . He has invested alot of time and money testing and building LED fixtures for all sizes of reef tanks .

I think you should try the DIY leds and you will never look at any other led

gotcha. i will have to take a look.

there is a local, "soundwave", who builds diy led units. i am seriously tempted to have him build me something for my display. i recently switched to 400w radiums and it was a big mistake. torched about everything even running just 1 hour and w/ eggcrate. after having the leds over my frag tank i don't think florescent or halide lighting is going to satisfy me anymore anyway.

The Diy thread that i made will help you if you want to build it by yourself and if you need help dont hesitate to ask me there is an other guy that i think is a pro in leds here also

the main reason for me to say this is the advantage that the Diy gives you

-The creed gives more penetration then the powerbrites and more color
-If led goes bad you replace it very easy and thats it. In a powerbrite you will end throwing it on the garbbage
-You could use as many LEDS as you want to
and mix of colors between the 420 and the 460 Nm LEDs
-You could build it like you want to

I have mines an they are sweet

thanks eggie. these two points are key for me. i have a pretty unique aquascape and putting the light right where i want it is appealing.

Re. the IceCap; they aren't the 1W LEDs, but there are a LOT of them in each tube. It gives the same overall effect that Powerbrites too.

My friend runs a Nano Cube with 6 of the Powerbrites (Four 50/50's & Two 460nm). His corals/clams have been thriving for over a year. One thing you need to be careful of is coral burning due to the point-source optic(s). Don't ask me how I know that! :squigglemouth:

BUMP, any more on these.....POWER BRITES ARE STILL SOLD OUT FROM THE PLACES I SHOP....

GRANT

How are the stunners?

grant - check out the finnex led bar. it's got 9 1-watt led's w/ optics and you can set them for 100% or 50%. saw them over twinspots_goby's tank last night and they are very comparable to powerbrites.

comparable..............which is better?:wink::xd:

honestly i don't have a preference at this point. i forgot to take one of my powerbrites with me yesterday to do a direct compare.

i did notice that it was harder to tell when he turned them on than it is with mine while running the t5s, but there definitely was a difference. his t5 bulbs are overdriven and closer to the water, so that may be the difference there. again a direct comparison is in order. :D maybe saturday i will take my powerbrites over to compare.

i believe the coverage area is better w/ the finnex bar. maybe different optics with less focused light.

Could some one post a pic of there power brights off? i want theem but want to mount them to my PM some how and im not sure how due to im not sure what they look like up close. So if any one could thanks a bunch i want to see if i can do this and make it look clean.
