I went the cheap route with some Fluval Sea powerheads for my 75g and they are unbelievably loud. I'm looking at Icecap Gyres or a set of MP40s. Would either of those be good for a 75 gallon?

It's going to depend on how you're going to stock the tank.

I have a mixed reef 75 and I'm using 4 x Nero 5's, but they're only really necessary because the corals really start to block water flow when they get large. For the first year I was only running 2 at around 50%.

Now I have 4 running around 70%.

I run some jebaos on a 90, slw-20's and have no issues with noise or flow at the moment. I can't speak to your future plans but there's a few options.

I also run 2 MP40's on my 120 that is older but yet doesn't seem to be moving forward as fast as my 90, so go figure.

How do you like the MP40s? I've been looking at getting 2 or 3, I like the wire being outside the water and also they seem a little smaller than most powerheads

I've got 2 icecap gyres on my 40 breeder, I love it Completely silent, and eliminates all dead spots

Mp40's are noisy so if sound is an issue. Move on to say tunze
mp40s are far from noisy, they are actually very quiet and fantastic to use.

If you're looking at them for your 75, they are great powerheads. I have 1 in my 75 on one end and I use my return for the flow on the opposite end.

**note I do have a peninsula setup.

I will say it again. Mp40's are noisy. I can hear them in the middle of the night... rooms away ramping up and down. So yes they are very noisy. When I ran tunzes there was never any sound and that was ramping from 10 to say 90% which is what my mp40 are essentially doing randomly.

If I had my mp40 set to go from say 10 to 40%, maybe I would never hear them, but I would have buy 3 more to get the flow I need for my sps so what would be the purpose. They are out rate disturbing to listen too some times and quit irritating to listen too if you need high flow.

Be warned. My display is in my living room and I'm right beside them when watching TV. The mp40s is the only sound coming from tank that is bad.My redsea 45 on same tank are dead quit. I have been debating on going back to tunzes due to noise.

sounds like you need to clean it, I can not hear mine at all and it's beside my head in the living room

Not a cleaning issue. It's an mp40 issue. They are dead quite when you first buy them. Then after some un predefined time 2 weeks to 3 months....they turn noisy. Original was about 3months, bought second Westside and threw old one away since cleaning it did not fix issue. Tried to make some changes to it but ultimately got frustrated and tossed it. After 2weeks on second wetside it started humming again. Bought 3rd Westside still in box as backup on 2nd set. Did research and found plenty of people complaining about the noise. So there is nothing to do about it. Maybe a solution would be to get mp60 and run at lower power, but to me that's ridiculous. Anyway. I like the clean look, so that is the only reason I haven't pulled them off.

It really depends on what settings you have them on and power needed if you hear anything. When I had the mp40 on my 40 gallon frag tank running at 20 to 30% power. It's silent. When you put it on 255gallon tank and need to move more water by increasing power. It's noisy at my house.

They are real quite in many applications, just not in my case where I'm trying to move more gph in sps dominant tank with random gusts

Anyway. Sorry to derail thread. Just wanted toblet OP know that these mp40's can be really loud

I have zero noise with my MP40, and I bought it second hand. it's about 5 yrs old. cleaned once a month in my sink. no vinegar solution to degrade the plastics.

it only makes a humm sound if it has algae build up, then I clean it off and back to quiet.

it will also be louder if it's not lined up together properly.

I have a ton of noise from my MP, but it’s secondhand and a dinosaur so it probably needs a new wet side. I’ve got Nero 3s that are dead silent on full blast. Ai just announced the Nero 7, so there’s that, but 2 or 3 of the Nero 5s should be enough

2- Nero 5

2- Jebao SLW-20

2- Sicce voyager

I like the slim design of the Nero, do you use those?
I have a nero 3 and Nero 5. Very quiet and runs on wifi app as well as manually using the button speed control
