Powerheads for a 75g

I have a nero 3 and Nero 5. Very quiet and runs on wifi app as well as manually using the button speed control
Would one on each end be good placement? Roughly half way down the glass?

Sorry. Very new to saltwater.

I run 2 reef octo pulse 2’s and one mp40 in my 75. The mp40 does have some noise after a while but a swap out of wet sides always works. Reef Octo pulse dead silent never any issues in over two years.

I'm a big fan of gyre type pumps.
I have 1 jaebao cp-120 in my 150g 30"high 6'long 18" deep - top right side, and run it at 30%
The contents (rockwork coral etc) is "aerodynamic", accidentally :)
I do have 1 "dead" spot, thinking of adding an MP jaebao 20 :grinning-face-with-sweat:

It's going to depend on how you're going to stock the tank.

I have a mixed reef 75 and I'm using 4 x Nero 5's, but they're only really necessary because the corals really start to block water flow when they get large. For the first year I was only running 2 at around 50%.

Now I have 4 running around 70%.
4 N5s running on @ 70% in a 75. Wow thats a washing machine.

I have 2x nero 5s in my 90 only going 70% and everything gets mad if i crank it up more. I added a reefwave25 to the top back glass to help with flow but only running 10%.

Neros are really quiet if your looking for that. Jebao are somewhat quiet. But gyres are probably the quietest.

I went the cheap route with some Fluval Sea powerheads for my 75g and they are unbelievably loud. I'm looking at Icecap Gyres or a set of MP40s. Would either of those be good for a 75 gallon?

well cheap is fine but you were supposed to buy jeabo and not fluval :)

I found that the vortech (MP40) types are quiet but with age they can make some auditable noise.

I missed that part. Haha. I just read you should get powerheads and bought those bc Petsmart had them. I was completely winging it. Lol

Don't stress - we've all done impulse buys.

Use them as long as you can then maybe you can use them in a QT or for mixing salt, or just keep as spares.

Nothing goes to waste in this hobby. Nothing.

Likely gonna be salt mixers so I can take my small powerhead and put it in my 10g I'm setting up for my 18m old, she loves the fish, but my 75g is just above eye level

Do you need 1 controller for 2 gyres?
Yes, you need the hydros wave engine to control the gyres, its a large investment.

Or you can use the hydros controller to control the gyres, but that is even larger investment.

Is the mobile app pretty easy to use for these?

gyres need regular maintenance! make sure you look at reviews!
Didn't know that, thanks. I'm kind of torn, I like the slim design on Nero's but I've read some reviews that they've sucked in some smaller fish and I've got a lot of small fish right now as I've only had this tank running about 2 months

Not a cleaning issue. It's an mp40 issue. They are dead quite when you first buy them. Then after some un predefined time 2 weeks to 3 months....they turn noisy. Original was about 3months, bought second Westside and threw old one away since cleaning it did not fix issue. Tried to make some changes to it but ultimately got frustrated and tossed it. After 2weeks on second wetside it started humming again. Bought 3rd Westside still in box as backup on 2nd set. Did research and found plenty of people complaining about the noise. So there is nothing to do about it. Maybe a solution would be to get mp60 and run at lower power, but to me that's ridiculous. Anyway. I like the clean look, so that is the only reason I haven't pulled them off.

It really depends on what settings you have them on and power needed if you hear anything. When I had the mp40 on my 40 gallon frag tank running at 20 to 30% power. It's silent. When you put it on 255gallon tank and need to move more water by increasing power. It's noisy at my house.

They are real quite in many applications, just not in my case where I'm trying to move more gph in sps dominant tank with random gusts
I've had this same issue. I've bought two MP40s at two different times over the last two years and all four them have turned noisy after 2-3 months. Very unsatisfied with these powerheads.
