I, have a frag of the PPE chalice that has not grown at all in two years. Its in a 65gal. cube. 27x24x24. its about 15in.under a 250de. 20k. and 2/65wat. cps. my question is would it do better lower in the tank. my cornbreedtrash me. chalice has grown to about 20 eyes in that time. its about 20in. below the light. thanks for any input, that might help this little guy.

Mine grew slow and now has 20+ eyes. I think it's more favia than chalice. But that's just me.

It is a favia for sure. I had a piece a while back that did nothing for a year - barely any growth at all. I acquired a larger piece in a trade and it has grown significantly. There seems to be a point with this favia that it just takes off (and creeps along up until that point). It's a really nice piece but painfully slow at first in my experience!

Here is an older pic of mine....

Mine has morphed a bit compared to Craigs. Mine is placed more to the side of the tank away from direct MH light, so it lost it's blueish white coloration. I had to move it as it's sweepers were taking some of my other corals out. But this guy can take some HIGH light. It used to be colored just like Craig's.:squigglemouth:

I agree its a fave to. i put it high in the tank knowing it would have the more blueish tint in color. but read others are having better growth lower in their tanks. ether way i'm going to move it, just because it hasn't grown at all. it could be my fish swim by and rub against it. or the frag skeleton is about a 1/2in. high from plug to polyp, and little star fish were always cleaning that 1/2in. section. maybe they were damaging the growth edge. i have removed most of the star fish. i also have a 1200 maxijet with a rotation head on it, that might be blowing water right on it every rotation. this little corals has a will to live that just won't quit. and he has me and you pros to help it along. thanks for your input. miyags.

what about this one?

What do you think it is if it's (for sure) not a favia? Not asking in a challenging way, just curious what you think as most others do believe it is. Thanks!

def a favia.......... but lets not :horse: and try to help this guy out.

I have a few favia and they typically do not like really high flow. Turbulent flow yes but more of a gentle swirl than a complete on and off blast like it sounds yours is experiencing. I would agree that moving it is worth the try I mean why not its been a year. Good luck bro

Okay i'll take another pix from my Dt of the whole thing. But its formation look nothing a like a favia.

no problem here. I love seeing pictures of this coral and how it grows different in different tanks. i just wish mine would start looking like a fave or chalice, instead of looking like the rock its glued to.

I got mine as roughly a full polyp and two halfs i have roughly 12 polyps 4 mounths later, it seems like a very fast grower to me, I put it on the bottom and have left it. Great color and great growth down there i have yet to move it anywhere other then where i put it first.

P.s. Hands downs it's a fevia i have never seen a chalice grow like this does. It got the chalice name due to JC trying to cash in on the chalice crazz

My PPE favia grows painfully slow as well and I have tried all sorts of locations, flows, and lighting....I think when they are tiny it just takes a while for them to get going...but who knows.....

cheers,
Darren

i think its a favia because its tentacles are like 2-3 inches long.. its a bad girl so its alone in the corner of the tank where it cant sting anyone.. i have never had any chalice with tenticles that long.
