I acquired a 2 polyp frag of PPE's a few months ago and they have yet to sprout a new pup. Are they real slow grower's or do I have the watching paint dry syndrome going on here?

LOL those polyps are on my 10 but man I've had the same 5 polyps for a year haha so for me a watched pot boils before my ppe grow

Yep, they are slow, they also seem to be somewhat conditional. I got my first frag with two polyps, within a month it sprouted two new polyps. After that, it was a looooong time before it sprouted another.

this is true. I started with 3 polyps on my old colony. took about a year to get to about I think 40 polyps. I'm not really sure what I did with that colony.

Slow for me as well, but they do pop a new baby out now and then. Nothing compared to nuke green etc that grow like wildfire.

OP (I see you have 6 bulbs) Where do you have them in your tank? Mine are on my sand bed 22" under 4 t-5's (any higher and they seem to close up) moderate flow if that helps. Bulbs are blue + blue + blue + Fiji purple. Anyone else care to share? I'm curious because maybe I'm doing it wrong.

They have a tendency to melt after having more than 20 polyps. I have had two colony melt on me for no reason.

is it normal for some zoas to just be growing and then not sprout out another polyp for months? i had bought a 3 polyp nightmare frag and 2 months later i had 17 polyps. i fragged 1 polyp for myself and traded the colony for utter chaos and tyree space monster. this was about a month ago, now my nightmare polyp hasn't grown another polyp since.

I'm curious as well, I saw it suggested on another site that perhaps there are actually two varieties of these - one that is a slow grower, another that is fast; with perhaps only some slight differences in the intensity of the colors. Anybody have any experience with or thoughts on that?

I've had both. the OG ones are deep purple with very bright green skirts. the other variety was dull and remained dull even after a few months in captivity. there's also the speckled kind. those are a tweener in coloration, but closer to the OG ones. :)

Hello Marvin, one of those polyps below is yours from years ago. They sure take their time multiplying!! Mike
