PPE, slow growers?

OP (I see you have 6 bulbs) Where do you have them in your tank? Mine are on my sand bed 22" under 4 t-5's (any higher and they seem to close up) moderate flow if that helps. Bulbs are blue + blue + blue + Fiji purple. Anyone else care to share? I'm curious because maybe I'm doing it wrong.

My PPE's are about 24" from my lighting. I have 3 atinic and 3 14k bulbs.

Started with 2-3 around 3 months ago. Now I have maybe 6.

What are the recommended light and flow conditions for the PPE?
I hope the single polyp I have is a fast grower.... :/

I think we have to be a bit more specific when it comes to slow or fast growth... if we don't compare it to something then the adverbs slow of fast are vague and is biased by the person that's reading it, plus all tanks are different and even two frags from the same colony, if put in different tanks, will probably not grow at equal rates! Although I don't have much experience with Zoa's but I do have a PPE colony that's been with me for around 4 years. It had from what I can remember it had around 5-10 polyps when I accquired it and since then has grown into a +or- 60 polyp colony... so subtracting the initial polyps and dividing it by the time i've had it.... I estimate an average growth rate of about 12.5 polyps per year or 1 per month!... it's up to you to decide if that's fast or slow.
here is a pic... enjoy

PR - you make a good point but growth tends to be exponenential = 1 adult polyp may only produce 1 new one every 6 months but then even i you get the same rate, with 2 adults you could get 1 every 3 months and with 6 adults, one baby a month
the reason many of these more exotic polyps seem to grow so slow is because most start with a polyp or two frag
that 60 plus colony of yours probably grows quit well i would think - good job btw on growing such a nice sized colony

oh yeah, also - the above analogy was over simplified of course, because there is a built in lag time in the system - the time it takes for a new polyp to become an adult with enough energy reserves to reproduce

PR_reefers in the pic, lol, I'm going to sue you! See you in court!!!:xd:

Good points.

- PR_Reefers - What type of lighting is that incredible colony growing under? How deep? Type of flow? Do you grow a lot of SPS or mostly LPS?

**This is turning out to be a great forum**

LOL.... just wanted to show evidence to that it's my tank....I forgot at first but I gave you credit below it...and I thank you again for taking nice pics of my tank I can actually share!!LOL

john... I agree also...I didn't think about it before the average really isn't relevant that much to actual growhtn but just trying to give overall how much it would take for a colony to grow a certain size!

I currently use 4 T5 HO + reefbrite 36", it is on the sandbed near the right corner of my tank about 20-24" from light; moderate flow....:squigglemouth: don't like using these vague terms for the before mentioned reason, lol, but it's definitley not low. both actually.... upper 1/3 of my tank is sps, lower 2/3 is mostly chalice and acans...

I have a halide/T-5 on the rack in the fuge, and T-5/LED on the display, frags in both the fuge and in multiple locations in the display, dont see too much difference either way, but they do grow faster the more I feed.

I started with 2, they turned into about 6, and I fragged them into three 2-polyp frags. Then those grew out a bit, one went into the display tank and became about 12 polyps before halting for about 6 months. What I did notice was that an asterina star chewed a hole in the side of one of them, and there was a nearby aiptasia. I believe they were getting just irritated enough to stop growing. Now that those two problems are solved, I've noted a couple more polyps. I'm going to make a few 2-polyps frags and reduce the size of the mother colony and see what happens.

what i have started to do is cut the flesh that connects the polps and it seem to get them to grow i get about 3-4 polps a month to grow that way

What do you mean? Do you physically cut each individual polyp free from each other but leave them on the same rock?

yep thats what i do it stresses them out a touch and they start growing i got up to about 20 ppe and they just stopped and a guy told me to cut them and they started to grow again.

interesting... sounds promising since it would make them fell lonely and probably stimulate their reprodoctive cycle... nice thought +1
