what is the going price for a 1/2" square and a 1" square frag of garf purple bonsai? i found someone who has some that he fragged up but he doesn't know what to sell them for to me. i don't want to low ball him with a too cheap of price.

IF he can trace it back to GARF, prob around $60-$80. if he can't, $20 max.

the original GARF bonsai strain has gotten so lost in a sea of tons of other valida/tricolor morphs in this hobby that people now have collectively called them "bonsais", and most people just call all tricolor acros GARF bonsai's now, which completely destroys the purpose of having a coral by lineage...b/c not all tricolor acros are created equal, that is for sure.

have to get some more info from him on it than. i have tri colors already. thanks for the info.

problem is, i've seen people local to me put up $80-$100 for a frag of what they thought was the GARF bonsai, and it came in as a little brown/light purple frag. they were told it would color up after a while, but it never did. it just stayed brown with light purple tips and green polyps....and IMO....no different than many tricolor/valida acros.

The biggest factor is what it's worth to you. If you really like something it's worth a whole lot more to you. Selling something by a name isn't something I've ever liked. People tack Tyree, or Leng Sy onto something and quadruple the price. The same is done with ORA corals. I used to sell the Pearlberry when I carried ORA for $64.99. Many other sites it was $150 because of the name. Don't let the name sway you.

I would have to disagree. The Garf Bonsai is one of those corals out there that is very hard to trace lineage. Their are too many similar looking valida/tri-colors available compare to the Garf. Anyone can say they got it directly from a source, that it is a Garf Bonsai. If you look at the difference between a LE corals and a "wannabe", you can easily tell the difference in color, striation, intensity, grown pattern, etc... Look at most of the new Tyree Monti's, they are unique in color, contrast and grow patterns, and are rarely seen in the hobby. Those montis look good even without a fancy name. The Garf Bonsai has no difference compare to most tri-color/valida. Thats why you should buy what you like and most importantly, what you can afford.

very true. don't put up big money just b/c a name, only put up money if you really like it independent of the name. i don't have the GARF bonsai b/c i have yet to see one that i really thought was the real deal and worth paying anywhere near $80 for a frag.

however, the tricolor that is in my avatar i traded both my kidneys to get...lol....its way better than any "GARF bonsai" or other tricolor/valida i've seen in person.

i am going to see if he can send me some pics of it. i don't buy things because of the name. i have to like what it looks like. most of the frags i get are from club meetings and after i put them in my tank i usually forget what kind it is anyway. i just really like the color of the bonsai. deep purple with green polyps.

GARF or NOT?

If somebody has a frag fo me PM me!!! :marv

So is it ok to name it Tritons Bonsai??

name it whatever ya like. standard name would be a.valida, tricolor, or bonsai.

you just can't call it a GARF coral unless you knew it came from their lineage......its a companies name, just like if it were the Tyree name.

well ya'll I do admitt this is a very nice specimen and it looks just that beautiful sitting in my tank.... I was told it was a Garf by the company I bought it from but I do not have any papers to prove it.... but maybe he does...
I guess my whole point was.... naming a coral is fun and you can put your name on it but if you don't send some kind of certificate or paper with your frags to continue the linage on to the next buyer and that buyer on to the next showing where they got it from and so on all corals will just come down to it really being a particular species.
" The Proof is in the paper" I guess?
I have thought about generating some kind of numbered certificate to send along with my frags so the next person can see were I got mine from. but then again that could be alot of work Right????

I will be fragging this probably this fall I would like it to get some bigger so that when I do frag it I will still have a nice size colony. but I will keep you in mind when I finally get the nerve to cut it.
If somebody has a frag fo me PM me!!! :marv

yes, just like how diamonds come with a certificate of authenticy. i will make a company that verifies the coral is the real deal, all you have to do is send it to me for inspection. ;)
