PRICE !--VorTech's New "Quite Drive" !!!

I agree.

I have both Jebao and several Hydor powerheads and most have been great performer's and quit.
I have one used Tunze powerhead and need the controller, probably the 7096, so I want to try them out.

The Tunze's are also expensive, even used, but I hear way less problems with them vs the VorTech's.

I'm not sure what the point is here - the MP60 has always been $600+. As for no powerhead being that expensive, there are more expensive powerheads out there for large tanks - the high end Tunze streams are in that ballpark (or more), and the HydroWizards are much more than that. Big tanks need big powerheads. To run a good closed loop with similar GPH? You're definitely over $600.

I'm not a huge fan of the Vortechs, but I understand why they're so expensive. I've owned a few, and they're well built with great customer service and great control.

In your tank range, you'd be looking at the MP40s anyway.

My point is, that NO powerhead should be that expensive.

The technology of a powerhead is minimal, even the electronics. I read and listen to so many
owners of the VorTechs having problems with the dry and wet sides of them. Although the
customer service is wonderful, any expensive products should not have issues of breaking down so much.
For that kind of money, they should be able to last several years without breaking down.

If that was the case, I'd be more willing to purchase some, but for $675 a pop,.....I will never have one.
It's ridiculous.....:squigglemouth:

Well, then it's not the pump for you. But clearly, many people have found value in them, or Ecotech wouldn't be in business. They're targeted at the premium side of the market. Saying that "NO powerhead should be that expensive" is somewhat nonsensical. Any item should ideally be priced where a company makes the most money between volume and margin. Given the fact that an MP60 targets tanks (generally) greater than 300 gallons, and that those tanks cost upwards of $20k pretty easily, $675 (or $1350 for two) is a small part of the overall cost.

If you have a long tank (>6'), what are your other options? There are no Jebao pumps that come close to it.

To me, they have the "name factor". Like you said, they cater the people willing to spend a bunch of money, and it doesn't matter,..."I have Vortech's".
I say, "so what". A LFS has a 180g set up and bought two MP-60's for it. After sending one in for repair 3 times, he sold both and went back to Tunze's,
which are also expensive, but seem not to have as many issues. Since then. he's ran his now for over 2 years without and issues.

On a 6' to very large tanks, you have many options for water movement, like a few return pumps and/or dump box's, and a few powerheads to help out with dead spots.
heck of a lot cheaper,..... than a few to several large VorTech's and without having them sent in for repair all the time.

Like I said, if they were more reliable I would purchase one or two.

Also, if they would come down off their high mountain and sell them for half the cost, I would assume they would have a lot more business,
but when they say (like you too) that "a company makes the most money between volume and margin", well sure,.....
but you would have many more customers,.... and a lot happier ones as well !

As Ford Motor Company found out with selling to the mass market, rather than just the "well to do people", they sold hundreds of thousand's of more cars
at a lower cost, also still had the same quality, and made 10 (+) times the money for the company.

The best thing was, the company did very well and people were very happy with a quality car at a reasonable cost !

I have a 6' 220 using 2 jeabo wp60 I bought them use for $60 they certainly do the job only issue is they need to be vinegar bath 1 a month or so I'd love a mp 60 or gyre and might get one some day but if u don't have a lot extra cash the wp r hard to argue against and certainly work so far all my jeabo stuff about 1 yr old works fine

When you look at a Tunze that is in that price range you are looking at a power head that is rated for aquariums over 1000 gallons. I have owned many Tunze Ph's throughout the years and while I am sure their have to be some bad one's, I have never had an issue with any of mine. That being said, I do see the appeal of a vortech as it's much cleaner looking in the display and really wish Tunze would make similar.

Which Tunze are you referring to? The closest I know of (which was discontinued) is the 6305 and that was similar in price to the MP60 with slightly lower flow, I believe.

125g.

But, the purpose of my thread is asking why, VorTech's price is so high.
As far as I see it, NO,....powerhead is worth $675 bucks.
:baby:They also have controller and no dumb looking wires in the tank. BK skimmers are over a grand for acrylic and a pump you can start a thread on that next.

I have been running mp40 since 08 and I don't think I would ever run any other ph in my display if it's not a vortech I love the control that I have with them and don't forget apex ready also no wires in the water was the main reason for me loving these ph. Never had any issues and they are still running the same as day one.

I also have 2 08 generation 2 mp40 with no problems and will not buy the newer models because I feel no need for them. Old pumps work fine after 7 yrs and no other pump has an undertow and moves the water like they do.

The 6255 is rated for 1050G but does have a peak of 4800 gph so I do have to give you credit in saying that it is lower in GPH than the MP60

FWIW I have 3 mp40 and a Gyre 130 running on my tank and have no plans to upgrade top the newer QD pumps. After selling the old ones and purchasing the QD's I'll lose $170 per pump.... for what? I know many guys personally thinking thinking the same way. Long term the new design is great, but I don't see these pumps as an answer to cheaper pumps or designs like the GYRE.
