I find this interesting as the rumors of t5s no longer being available have been floating around for years. I only noticed the death of compact fluorescent bulbs in the article but are we getting closer to the end of the t5 bulbs. I have heard the specialty lighting exemption brought up in the past. I’m just curious what others think. I know some people were hoarding bulbs a few years ago. Part of the article suggested that the prices of leds are now only marginally more than cfl. Which really isn’t the case with say a sixty inch, four bulb t5 fixture vs an equivalent led setup. Just wanting to see if people’s view on this has changed over the past few years. There were a lot of diehard t5 fans out there as well as a ton of time to get with the times grandpa led fans. Curious to see if it’s overwhelmingly led and I’m just an old dude

Some people swear by LED, some by T5. IMHO - fluorescent lights (in general) will eventually be banned - not today or tomorrow - but eventually. And - it will make no difference to reefing. PS - I also think the same about metal halide lighting. I personally like metal halide - haven't used it for a while.

I believe T5s are out there and people will continue to stay with them... though I'm an AI LED person these days.

"They" also said those incandesent heat light bulbs were gone never to come back, and I nearly pulled out two bathroom fans that are using LED bulbs these past many years... and guess what has recently shown up on the shelves... yep incandesent heat light bulbs...

"They" are wrong... about many things, so why not T5s - where there is someone offering money, someone will usually step up and sell an item. Yippee for good old capitalism lol!

metal halide spot lighting - I represented that category too. Yippee for saltwater in the 80s and early 90s!

Yes - like I said - not today or tomorrow. Going forward - it has been my long-standing prediction that keeping fish itself will be outlawed. Let alone the lighting. :)

I totally agree. It is inevitable as with many things. Wether by legislation or just poor sales. On the environmental side I am starting to feel bad about it. I always took my used bulbs in for disposal or left them out when they had an annual roundup. Where I live now, they just don’t care. No disposal, just toss them in the trash, you must be from California. The local hardware store said they dispose of them but after I dropped them off and went shopping I later saw them break them up in a trash can.

I buy two years supply every year and store them, so don't really care what market place does in short term.

T5s are generally the gold standard on adaptable even coverage. To blend LED's you raise them up further of diffuse them to make them behave like T5's.

That is all fine but reality is aquarium suppliers are getting fat dumb and happy of the Ecotech / BRS partnership. To mature LEDs there needs to be parts that are standardized and priced out. You know reflectors, chips, drivers. Without out them you pay 900 a unit for 300 of technology. "Oh that will never happen because ... our margins are way too high.

Well it happened with DIY years ago and environment was never dealt with properly, I do not see the case of a G6 ecotech as magical... Hydroponics will likely standardize first and then aquariums will request chips for these systems.

Yeah, they say the same about Metal Halide bulbs. Just in case, I bought 20, 250w Hamilton just 2 days ago, lol....

Hamilton is still in business? They have been out of all inventory for years so I stopped looking.

Are you the published author? Exciting to hear from you!

If you mean Martin Moe, no, sadly, he has passed away. I also enjoyed his books and got a lot of mileage out of them through the decades.

Marine aquarium systems and invertebrates? I think, I could have butchered the title but that book changed my life back in the 90s

It's already happening- I am in Commie-Fornia. We are having our kitchen done, and to be to code they are REQUIRING that all the lights are LED and came LED from factory. If they come without a bulb, you cant just put an LED bulb in it- contractor wont install it. If they come with a normal bulb, you cant put an LED bulb in it and make it work. We just bought some cheaper LED ones and we are going to remove them after the contractor is done to put some Edison Bulb lights in.

I couldn't believe it when he told us that. We found some nice lights that we wanted to put edison bulbs in but couldn't find that light from the factory with LEDS so he refused to put them in. Like what the heck? lol Even if we put LED edison bulbs.

I have tried a dozen LED bulbs for LOWES for outdoor garage night lights. Most claim years of life and last 9 months. I leave lights off now.

It’s been known in the industry that florescent lamps are on their way at being phased out. It started a lil over a decade ago with t12 lamps. Also, if you need ballasts or think you may need one, nows the time to start stocking up with replacements. Lutron, a huge manufacturer of dimming ballasts is having major issues keeping up with demand due to shortages in minerals. I received a ballast yesterday that was ordered for a tenant 5 months ago. Finding these things is only gonna get harder.

Typical warranty for led is 5 years. I’d Take back the affected fixtures and get replacements.
