OK, I give up. I absolutely love my pulsing zenias. But they take over the tank. I try to weed them out, but they come back, little by little they like to grow on the corals that I adore… I have heard that there is a fish to eat this, but it is risky. I have no other option. I do not remember what type of fish this is. Any advice?

I have tried cutting them out and not removing the rocks. Then I tried one at a time taking every rock out of the tank, gouging into the rock with my pocketknife, giving them a rinse in salt water before replacing them into my tank… and still, they come back. I love the Zenias, I love the movements, but they honestly take over the entire tank. I wish I had been warned when I purchased them..I hear that there is a fish that likes to snack on them, but also eats some coral. At this point I am almost willing to take the gamble.

I would suggest starving them. Also increase flow.

Im afraid I've not heard of xenia munchers except ones that eat other corals too.

#reefsquad A Xenia munching Fish?

I was going to say a type of butterfly fish, but your system is way too small. You can lay odds anything you buy will almost certainly go after your other coral. Only other option would be to remove the corals you want to keep, add small sized coral muncher and let it go to town on everything.

Few other ideas....

"Move your coral to another tank and raise your temp to 95 degrees to melt the Xenia"
- I have never done this, just doing some researching, but i'm curious as to how this would affect the bacteria in your system?

"Inject Aptasia-X or calc mix into the xenia"

I have wondered about this....

Just did a Bunch of reading and it seems a matted filefish eats pulsing zenisa besides apistasia

I think I have the cure. It's worked for me....

Cut the head and remove it, then inject the base with a little vinegar. They shrivel up and die. Just make sure to not let the cut part grow somewhere else.

Also, you can cover them with something, to block the light. They eventually seem to die.

I guess you could lower it as well, i've yet to try either, just some ideas i've found while researching. I would consider injecting the xenia... I have plenty, i could try it
If he can take the rock out and in a bucket w powerhead, just set it outside. You could zap it with vinegar and a rasp too. (BTW) when I pull rock out I set up my $60 canister filter with floss only. Keeps the yuck down. then a WC and bacteria.

I did not know that. Good find!

They always grow or spread upwards. So if you place a rock above them, they will migrate on to that rock, then just remove the rock. That's the theory anyway.

I bet Your Lfs will take some in trade. In the meantime lower nutrients maybe.

trade them at your LFS, or remove the rock, they always come back...
i regret adding kenya trees, xenia, and anthelia... no matter what i do it always comes back
