I just set up a new 120 and it running a GEN X pump and it kind of loud. I was wondering what other pump i can use that will be a little quiet. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I would use a quiet one, or the new eheim. Gadgets said that thing is really quiet.

Get the ATB flowstar. I have never been so impressed with any pump I have ever used. After that, I would get an eheim.

How much are they? GPH?

Kien - tagging along if you don't mind - I have an oversized Oceanrunner that works good, but I have to throttle back by >50%

My wife says i have to fix the problem the pump is too loud and she can't watch her tv show. So the more quiet the better. I need something external no in sump.

What size ehiem would you guys recommend it going right under the stand of the tank.

Thats funny!!! Can't be interrupting her soaps!

That there is your problem, All true external pumps have external fans, thus the extra noise. I pluged the bulkhead in my sump and went back to an internal. My wife even thanked me ;)

BTW, the ATB can be ran externally as well.

If I was going to go eheim, my first choice would be a 1260 and my second would be a 1262.

I think i will have to go with an internal pump if that is the only solution. If not my wife will nag me to death or even make me take the tank down.

External try something by either Iwaki or pan world. My Iwaki MD30 is pretty close to silent - only a slight whirring noise. My old Genx was definitely louder. I have heard (no pun intended) that pan world's need to be felt to know if they are on because they're so silent.

I have a pan world pump and i would recommend it. although not completely silent it is a lot quieter the genx pump I am running for my skimmer.

If you had a chiller I'd recommend a Poseidon P-3 or P-4. No external fan. They are absolutely silent. No noise at all. But they add a few degrees of temp to the water. I used a P-4 on my 180 and it added about 3-4 degrees, which I was able to counteract with a small clip-on fan on low speed.
I currently use 3 Poseidons on my 240. Even with 3 of them there is no pump noise.

ehiem is very quiet. i run a 1260 on my skimmer and can barely hear it. it's in the same room as my tv -about 8-10 feet away. my mag 3 is considerably louder

thanks for all the input. can i run the ehiem externally of only in sump.

If you choose a Quiet One get ready to do maintenance more often. That has been my personal experience. I run a Mag 12, it's quiet but adds heat as well. I too may be looking for a better pump.

Not 100% sure. I do know that my PM calcium reactor had an external ehiem on it, so I would say yeah.
