Pump question

On a 120 I would recommend a Ocean Runner 3500 or Eheim 1262. I use the OR 3500 on my 100 and would not want any less flow. I tested a Eheim 1260 quite extensively and it is in the same class as the OR 2500 when it comes to flow and head.

I tried Quiet Ones and literally had two go up in flames electrifying my tank both times and they are not all that quiet either. Mags run very hot and are not very quiet, I only use my Mags for mixing water and even then only in winter months due to heat gain. I bought a brand new Rio HF 26 series as a back up, used it once, cleaned it up and the next time I went to use it the magnet was swlled up where it would not turn. Same thing with a large Via Aqua 4900.

Any pump will make noise if it is not plumbed properly, usually with a short piece of flexible tubing off the discharge to break up any vibration and noise transmission through rigid PVC. You want to make sure there are no stresses in the piping and the pump should not be touching anything like the sides or other equipment. It doesn't hurt to sit a pump on a rubber mouse pad or even a plastic bag filled with sand. You may also try a large glob of silicone sealant (dry of course) on each leg or suction cup to isolate vibration.

I run a Mag 12, it's quiet but adds heat as well.

I am surprised. I run a magdrive 1800 on my closed loop. It is very powerful, and has been problem free for 2 years. It is not at all quit though, and added serious heat. I am very happy with it's preformance, but I had to add a few alternating layers of silicone sheets, and frag rack egg crate, both behind the pump, and under it, to get it quit enough, as it is inside my display tank, hidden in the live rock. I probably won't buy another one.

I would definitely try this to see if it helps with the noise at least until you can get a new pump. Might keep the better half happy and make your life easier.

NO QUIET ONE, THEY ARE NOT QUIET
Oceanrunner and eheim are extremely quiet internal pumps
as for external, the quietest pumps are the Velocity series pumps
when poseidon had them they labeled them P# but their normal numbers are T#
T4 is ~1200gph and T3 is ~800gph. The wierdest thing is they all draw the same power, 150w i believe
theyve been through a few different companies that labeled them but theyre all the same pump. i had a few of them, from dolphin, velocity and poseidon
So if you dont mind a warm tank, deffinately the pump to get, nothing quieter
