Purigen???

That bottle of bleach is freaking me out lol
After the steps he outlines, I leave mine in a dish of RODI for a week, just while I use some activated carbon in the tank. I heard somewhere, probably @Randy Holmes-Farley , that Purigen and activated carbon may remove different stuff from each other.

Purigen does no detoxifying of ammonia, temporary or permanent.
Looking for more tank stability after i fix my overfeeding rookie mistake! I know it only detoxifies temporarily and doesnt remove it but it would give me peace of mind that larry wouldnt ever be effected by it (larry is my pet lobster)! Im very diligent keeping his tank clean but purigen would be in place in case!! Does that make sense??? Lol im very new to it so dont want my mistakes effecting him
To tell u the truth i dont think my tank ever cycled properly! When i first set it up i only dosed woth alittle ammonia once with my bacteria starter! After getting a low low nitrites reading and no nitrates ever i think my bacteria starved and in turn the nitrites went to zero! I assumed this meant the tank was ready!! I never got algae or diatoms! So when i put larry in and started feeding him shrimp amd scallops the ammonia started building up and then nitrites! So i think i officially started the cycle!! This is where i caught it last thursday (thank god) did a 40% water change and started dosing daily with prime to detoxify ecerything cause larry is in there! I also dosed the tank with more bacteria! My ammonia is dropping rapidly from 3ppm to now 0.5ppm and now nitrites are sky high and nitrates are climbing! I did a water change of 10% yesterday and gonna do another one today! Should i do them daily to keep filtering out those nitrates? Or any deifferent advice? The purigen was for when my tank numbers are back to normal!!! Just some proactive research so to say! Im sorry to be a bother!! Rookie mistakes! Thank you for all the help!

Honestly I don't think purigen is that great. I have used an extremely oversized amount and saw no significant benefit. I think it is great at removing tannins, but those are not really much of a thing in saltwater tanks compared to freshwater tanks. If ammonia is your concern, add a whole bottle of this https://www.brightwellaquatics.com/products/microbacter_cwm_t.php
I think if you delve further, you will find that Purigen is just about the best product out there for scavenging organics.

There have been a few threads on it here that have heavily discussed it and I probably would only use it in conjunction with caron in freshwater tanks. Its just a waste of space imo since the only nitrogenous compound I think it can remove fish pee which isn't the main source of their waste anyways.

I’ve never understood what Seachem means by nitrogenous organics. That’s certainly not a good description for a chemist to understand what actually gets bound, but I suspect that is the point: sounds good and cannot readily be copied or disproven. lol

“Purigen generally ignores simple elemental compounds, having an extreme affinity for nitrogenous organics.”

My assumption under nitrogenous waste would mean it has to be either urea, uric acid, creatine, or ammonia. since fish produce ammonia, urea, and creatine, and it doesn't absorb ammonia, I would suspect it to be the latter.

Another thread noted that purigen appears similar to this https://aldexchemical.com/products/...ous-strong-base-anion-exchange-resin-acrylic/

Here was the thread that talked about it. https://aldexchemical.com/products/...ous-strong-base-anion-exchange-resin-acrylic/

It might be something like that.Seachem isn’t likely synthesizing polymers, just reselling them. That material won’t bind urea very well, but might bind uric acid as well as certain amino acids and proteins (those with a better negative charge).
