Purigen???

Yes i agree! Ive added more beneficial bacteria and am going to get more live rock! I was told to do a water change every few days of 10% because i did a massive one on thurs! The purigen is only gonna be after i get the problem fixed not to mask it now and the prime is to keep the toxicity from hurting larry while i wait for this process to play out!!! I wish i hadnt made this mistake to begin with lol! Wont be making it again!! Thank for the advice! I appreciate any help i can get!!
The issue with 10% water change .
even if your water source is 0ppm
You are only going to lower any ammonia by 10% which could prove to be not enough
More rocks will provide more surface area for more bacteria to process ammonia faster .
larry won’t starve as you’re restricting nutrients imported via feeding .

I recommendation is larger water changes while you have ammonia ..

You can either bag it and stuff it in one of the canister chambers or bag it and hang it over the rim of the tank.
More flow the better. I’ve got a HOB filter that I don’t have filtration in. I can stick bags of purigen in it because it has good flow. I also acclimate my bags in the HOB and put some Cheato in there.

Not a great pic

Yeah i wish i had that kind of access to marine stuff! Live in northern Canada and luckily i do a saltwater fish store here but ready live rock is 25.99 a pound lol!! I just bought 2 pieces and was almost 150!! Dry live rock goes for 17.99 but i was impatient lol
I would check with LR suppliers in Florida on the rate to ship to you. You can get 17lbs of Real gulf LR for $89. Airfreight shipping is about $89 in the states. I don’t see it being too much more getting to you. Just a flight change at a major airport. You would pick up the box at the airport and the LR will be submerged in water. That would be the best for your tank and Larry. Sounds like a big process but if the vendors can get it to you it’s really not that big of a deal. I checked water temps in the gulf and they can get down to low 60’s. Have you raised the temp of the water in the tank?

I’ve always been scared if this. I know some peeps use bleach on their filter socks. Just the sound of bleach makes me nervous.
Me too .
I haven’t used purigen since the early 2000’s and only used it once .
can’t even remember why or what it was for .

filter cloth .
I used to wash them in the laundry with bleach . Rinse with ro water and reuse but I figured it’s a expensive hobby , why be cheap and stingy trying to save Pennie’s on what it actually costs to replace the cloth

I've recharged purigen before. its not hard and there were no issues doing so.
But next time, I'd probably just toss it and buy new. I just use the small 100ml packs and using the sealed pack is just easier. No worries of any leaking out of the bag.

Thanks for the offer but dont need that much more rock so im good!!! Lol! And larry is a maritime lobster so his temp if set im between 55 and 56 degrees!!! I actually have a tank chiller attached for him!! Thanks for the help and advice though really appreciate it!

Ok can i do a 20% daily till ammonia is zero??? His ammonia is at 0.5 right now and with beneifical bacteria i added should that be good???

Hold up... You have a marine lobster in your tank. I'm from Boston originally, we call that dinner!

I think what you are doing with the seachem prime and water changes is fine , but also if you need more bacteria I’d suggest probidio bio digest it’s good stuff! When I started my tank I used seachem prime every other day and had an eel and clownfish , it worked with no issues.

so I’ll ask …
If adding tons of bacteria to colonize and process the ammonia .
How much of that bacteria will live long enough to process ammonia , if the bacteria present now isn’t enough to process the ammonia ?
Does adding more beneficial bacteria make sense knowing without surface area you might be at capacity already ?

The majority of beneficial bacteria must have a large surface area to be attached to. In a canister or HOB filter system, that "substrate" would be materials such as foam, ceramic rings and matrix. Most bacteria in a bottle products may not be selective to colder water temperatures. The temperatures that most reefers operate there tanks at are 78F. Also,
If there is not enough surface area for the beneficial bacteria to "hang on to" , the aquarium has to rely on the sand substrate or the glass which is more difficult to establish a large enough population to handle the strength (concentration) of ammonia that is generated from waste food and the inhabitants. Thus, flow and the use of protein skimmer helps overcome the accumulated waste that is in the aquarium. When you see all of those "Larrys" and "Lindas" in Red Lobsters or in grocery stores, we don't see the filtration system it takes to keep them healthy. For most of us, that means having an adequate supply of "live" rock.
I hope my comments help.

Honestly I don't think purigen is that great. I have used an extremely oversized amount and saw no significant benefit. I think it is great at removing tannins, but those are not really much of a thing in saltwater tanks compared to freshwater tanks. If ammonia is your concern, add a whole bottle of this https://www.brightwellaquatics.com/products/microbacter_cwm_t.php

To be honest i dont think i wemt through a proper cycle initially!!! I only added one small dose of ammonia at the very start and i think my beneficialbacterua starved out! Never had any nitrates the 1st time and very low nitrites! Now that i put food in there i think it properly started cycling everything once the ammonia started building up from larrys overfeeding!!! Mistakes were made lol!!!

Oh ok i see!! Lol! Yeah gonna throw it in my canister filter!

Do you think it helps with a tanks overall parameters stating abit more stable?
