I had a black tang that looked exactly the same. It was marine velvet.

Good luck! Glad to see you're getting him back in treatment. Do you have acriflavine?

thank you. I have some Rally but I'm a bit hesitant to use it because the only time I've ever used it I lost an achilles and yellow tang during for whatever reason. I do have some NFG which I've used with success and wonder if that can be used as an alternative.

If that is a tank you moved them into to observe after Quarentine then something in that tank had velvet in it...OR your treatment for 6 weeks did not work.

Usually you only treat for 30 days in copper and leave the display empty/fallow for 6 weeks.

Perhaps a step was missed and velvet never left

I don't think that is possible because everything is new. I was extra careful to avoid any contamination, washed my hands after every step, etc.. I'm going to put them through CP again for another month and hope for the best.

That’s definitely velvet. Did you leave any media in the filter in QT?

Where did you source your CP?

Did you use any poly fiber with the CP?

How long was the tank fallow (fish less)?

I have had velvet survive CP for all of the reasons above except non-pure CP as I learned from others here long ago fortunately.

Washing hands after every step doesn’t work, I learned that the hard way, too. Once your hand goes in the QT bleach it or let it dry for hours after washing hands. Velvet is some nasty stuff :(

FWIW a 30 minute 150 ppm h2o2 saltwater bath provided almost immediate relief to my fish recently. After the bath they were not symptomatic, though clearly still had velvet mucus sores, for four days. Then of course the next hatch occurred in the qt. I would really consider the hybrid TTM for velvet, especially if CP didn't work.

I have a purple tang just out of QT being in CP for about 6 weeks and put it in a new tank. He did have Velvet before but has been doing well after the CP. Can someone reassure me that its possible for them to be covered in dust ( From the new rock ) or is the velvet back. It doesn't look like velvet but just want to make sure. Either way I'm getting some fresh water heated up right now and going to dip him and give it another round of CP just in case.

looks like velvet to me too. Hope it clears up. :/

Did you use the rally as a bath? It can provide relief but is not absolutely necessary. If it were me I would do a freshwater dip with the protocol @Humblfish has described.

This is a new and certainly an intriguing option you could try as well. Would be curious to know how well it works on a fish with a severe velvet infection like this.

Proper CP is very effective against velvet, but often what you get off places like ebay is crap. Maybe enough to depress symptoms but not fully cure.

I have never had velvet survive chloroquine phosphate. Very very effective. IMO cp needs to sources from a pharmaceutical source otherwise might be better to look at copper.

My two fish that have it the worst are a midas blenny and flame angel. For the midas blenny it's impossible to see spots on its yellow skin, but its skin looks like shinny velvet and displayed the most behavioral symptoms. The flame angel had about half the white spots what the op has. I really wanted to do the hybrid TTM, but all of this unfolded over the holidays and it would have been too difficult to orchestrate. So they are getting CP right now. However, before going into qt they got the h2o2 bath and I immediately saw a difference. The flame cleared up quite a bit and the midas stopped scratching and swimming into powerhead flow. But like I said, day four came around and they were back at it. Fortunately the next day my CP arrived.

Nation Fish Pharmaceuticals

Did you use any poly fiber with the CP?

No.

DT fallow since October ?? The tank they are in is brand new, the QT they came from was brand new, Everything in the tank they are currently in is brand new (rock, media, powerheads, pump, heater).

So I checked my notes for everything I did for that specific QT tank and it has actually been in Chloroquine Phosphate for 12 weeks, did a water change half way through re-dosed with CP.

how does velvet survive this long and doesn't show itself until now? This is really frustrating.

How much did you dose in what size tank? Are there strong lights on the QT? CP does naturally breakdown, typically faster under moderate intensity light. I find CP to but very effective for these kind of external parasites.

850mg in a 20 gallon, no lights.

When you did your water change was the water pretreated and brought to the same level as the hospital tank Before using that water?

What did you use to measure the copper in the water? I use a Hanna Copper checker to measure copper.

Regardless, something didn’t work. Try a different Copper, or something this go around.

If everything has been as you say and it has been 12 weeks.....Unfortunately you have not had the dosage high enough to keep them in theraputic levels.

This would be my main guess as to why your treatment failed.

OR You would have had to cross contaminate the tanks some how but if you are %100 sure that didnt happen then its logical you got a bad batch and need to get new and redo.

This is really frustrating and why I haven't put my fish back into the DT and I'm in week 9 of my fallow. I seriously am concerned it's still in the display even after this long.

I know it doesn’t help but it might make you feel better... After treating all my fish in my QT for ich, I added a new fish that had ich... I swear some of the fish looked at me with judging eyes. Lol
