I’m just wrapping up my tank transfer method with a blue spot puffer and coral beauty. They will be going into a 32 gallon qt in about 5 days. The problem is because of needing to sterilize it after finding out they had ich, it has not been able to cycle. Should I just be monitoring ammonia and nitrite and make sure to dose prime?

Are you going to be using copper? You can not dose prime with copper.

I'd toss in some media from a clean tank if available... marine pure, sponge for HOB etc from a "clean" tank.

If that's available or not I'd go ahead an dump in a giant bottle of bio-spira and hook up an ammonia alert badge. still - test ammonia very often and do water changes to maintain zero ammonia & nitrite

If its just for observation then water changes should be enough. Monitor ammonia.

I guess if you are doing tank transfer you don't need copper but +1 to what phatduckk said use some biospira. I have been using it while treating with copper and it has kept ammonia in check

I use copper for ich. Even doing tank transfer if using copper for first 14 days it prevents the fish from getting another outbreak. I suggest going to the disease treatment part of the forum and read humblefish's thread.

Water changes are fine. Especially if they're only going to be in there for short time. It's only fish so they don't make that much waste to elevate ammonia levels in like a week or so. Just do a water change once a week and you're good to go. I never did understand trying to establish biodiversity in a QT. Especially one for observation. They're small tanks so easy to do a water change.

How many water changes. And why is there a difference when it is just observation?

If you use meds then water changes can be an issue trying to maintain the proper dosage.
I would monitor ammonia and when it climbs do a water change. In the mean time work on getting a sponge and the QT tank seeded with bacteria

As long as a did the ttm correctly, which isn’t too hard, it completely eliminates ich. I would rather not use copper with the puffer and angel if I can do something else

Can I use some leftover dry rock instead of a air sponge. And if I have a bit of seeded media from my other tank can I use that instead of buying the bio spira?

I totally get it. I have ammonia alert badges, if i see the ammonia going up i use a little more bio spira. It has worked for me, so far. Since you are not using copper, prime or any of them can make the ammonia go away for a while. Just if you are going to watch them for 30-40 days to make sure you got rid of the ich some sort of bacteria in a bottle would be very helpful in your situation.

If it was me and only needing the fish to be in that tank for 5 days, I'd just plan on doing a water change after a couple days and call it good.
I would keep a eye on ammonia

Ya I will probably just have them there for a week or so. I’m 16 and it’s hard to find the funds for this hobby which is why I’m trying to get away with not using a bacteria bottle. Do you know by any chance how long the prime will neutralize the ammonia for?

I do not. I know it will neutralize it pretty quickly but i have not used it without filtration. Sorry wish i could be more help

a proper dose of prime for the gallon amount of your qt will last 24 hours, if ammonia is present. so you would need to dose it every day. but you could certainly do that. i used it for two weeks during a mini cycle after upgrading my qt tank to a 40b.

According to the web site Prime will bind ammonia, making it non toxic for 48 hours. After 48 hours it releases it back into the water column.
