Question about Acans

I've blasted mine with light never had a problem most of this tread is anadotal. Acans tolerate a wide veriaty of lighting conditions

a couple months ago I switch only ONE out of 3 t5s in my tank. And blue zoanthids ,too, for that matter. However, soon after, I removed my aragonite, opened up my rock work, and tripled the flow in the tank and sump. I have two different euphyllia, a Duncan, a chilli, two gorgonians, and two acan colonies. All responded well to a gradual ramp up of the flow! One colony is in the center of a strong ebb and flow situation. I strongly believe LPS reputed to be too tender to handle high flow can adapt within an hour...

BTW that t5 bulb has a lot of blues and reds in it per my LFS guy. How can I tell if it's the light or the increased flow that's making everything grow so much faster in my tank? Is it more oxygen? rate of all gas exchange?

To the OP, what do you mean you can't get them to puff up, but during the day they extend from their base a lot? I would think that is saying they are puffing up with your lights on. From my experince, acans tend to stay very close to their base when they are not happy, due to the lights being too strong, or water being too clean. Acans will often do fine under shaded areas, so I would expect that your lights are not too low. Does your tank have low nutrients?

I have several large, beautiful Acan colonies that are under Kessil 360 WE'S. It's about placement, spectrum, and intensity. Figure those out and you'll be just fine.

I have several acan colonies under black box led's and they are open and growing nicely and have been for most of a year. They are located on the sand bed and exposed to a fair amount of wave action as opposed to straight flow. I don't spot feed but rather feed the entire tank daily so I assume if I spot fed they would grow faster but they seem to be getting enough to eat.

Acan colony and Duncan's under Kessil lights.

What intensity/kessil models/tank size?
At the time I took that picture today, the spectrum was at 60 and the intensity was at 90. I have 3 Kessil 360 we's over this tank. It is a 125gallon. I also have 10 of the Kessil 360we's over my 600 gallon that works great. I did have a problem with one of them
Flickering when ramping down and it hit about 15%. It only lasted about two minutes, but that's enough to drive you nuts. I called Kessil and I had a new light in 2 or 3 days.
